Wolves overcome 5-0 deficit to defeat Marshalltown

WESSON, Miss. – The Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College picked up their fifth win in a row on Wednesday with an 8-6 victory over the Marshalltown Community College Tigers out of Marshalltown, Iowa. The victory moves the Wolves to 11-2 on the season. Co-Lin will face Meridian Community College on Saturday, March 17.  The Tigers took an early 5-0 lead after a pair of walks, a groundout, and an RBI doubles brought in runs in the second, but the Wolves got three back in the bottom half of the frame. Austin Tidwell roped a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zach Pope drove Tidwell home with a live drive single. Thomas Slagle, a freshman from Franklin County, followed and hit his first collegiate home run. The two-run shot to right field cut the Tigers' lead to just two, 5-3.

The Wolves tied the game at five-all in the bottom of the fifth after Jaylyn Williams, the reigning MACJC Player of the Week, hit a sac fly to right, CJ Estave got an RBI.

The back-and-forth action continued in the sixth as the Tigers recaptured the lead with an RBI single to left. The shot scored Cowan who led off the inning with a single.

A wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth scored Tidwell and the Wolves once again had the game tied, 6-6.

Back-to-back Co-Lin players were hit by pitch and Estave reached base on an error to load the bases for Austin O'Flynn in the bottom of the seventh. O'Flynn grounded out, but the hard-hit ball allowed Ryan Zimmerman to score giving the Wolves a 7-6 lead.

Co-Lin scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth when a balk scored Slagle who reached base on an error.

Anthony Clapp started the game for the Wolves. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and four runs while striking out three. Zach James earned the win on the mound. He allowed one hit and zero runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking zero. A number of pitchers entered the game as relief, with Conner Ingram, Zach Smith, Tidwell, and Parker Lee all securing outs and ultimately the victory. Tidwell recorded the last three outs to earn the save for the Wolves.

Diego Davilla took the loss for Marshalltown. He went one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two.

Zimmerman led the Wolves at the plate with two hits in three at-bats, while Slagle led the way with two RBIs. Dillard led Co-Lin with three stolen bases on the day.
