Mississippi Delta, Co-Lin split a doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Wolves and the Mississippi Delta Trojans spit a doubleheader in baseball action today. The Trojans took the opener 13-7 and Wolves (14-14, 10-8) bounced back to take the nightcap 12-8.  

GAME 1

Mississippi Delta took an early 2-0 lead scoring runs in the top of the second and third innings. The Wolves answered in the bottom of the third inning. Kenner Bizot (Wesson/Wesson High School) drilled a two-RBI single to right to tie the game at 2-all. Ben White (Natchez/Cathedral High School) followed with a two-RBI double to give the Wolves a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Trojans tied the game at 4-all on a Davon Mills two-run RBI single. Gage Little's RBI single gave Mississippi Delta a 6-4 lead.

The Trojans added another run on a Eli Stallings solo home run in the top of the fifth. Co-Lin's White had a two-RBI single to right to pull the Wolves to 7-6.

Co-Lin tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Will-Lawson Harkins (Carthage/Leake Academy) solo home run.

Mississippi Delta plated five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Easterling's two-RBI scored Murphy and gave the Trojans a 8-7 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Theriot and Little increased the Mississippi Delta lead to 10-7. A hit batsman and a single by Stallings put Mississippi Delta up 12-7.

The final Trojan run came in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI single by Little.

Winning pitcher for Mississippi Delta was Julian Murphy. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked two in five innings of work. Blayne Clark relieved Murphy in the sixth inning. Clark gave up one earned run on four hits, struck out five and walked three.

Tucker Jones took the loss for the Wolves. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits and struck out two in 2.2 innings of work. Starting pitcher Caleb Rutledge threw four innings giving up six earned runs on eight hits, struck out two walked three.

At the plate for Co-Lin, Bizot was 4-for-5 with three singles and a double for two RBIs. Harkins had a home run and a single. Noah Freeman (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) and White (four RBIs) had a double and a single. Adding support with a single was Tom Biggs (Columbia, LA/West Monroe High School).

For Mississippi Delta, Gage Little was 4-for-6 and four RBIs. Theriot, Stallings, Murphy and Easterling and had multiple hits. Carson Chapman, Tanner Johnson and Davon Mills had a hit apiece.

GAME 2

An eight-run fourth inning propelled the Wolves to a 12-8 win in game two. Colton Womack (Liberty/Amite School Center) drew a lead-off walk. Hunter Estes (Purvis/Lamar Christian) and Harkins hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Peyton Parker (West Monroe, LA/West Ouachita High School) doubled scoring Womack and Estes tying the game at 5-all. Biggs singled to center to plate Harkins giving the Wolves a 6-5 lead. Marquez Hudson (Monticello/Lawrence County High School) sent a blast over the left field wall for a three-run home run and put the Wolves up 9-5. But the Wolves weren't done. Bizot and White drew walks. Freeman hit into a fielder's choice. Bizot scored on a wild pitch. Womack's ground out plated Freeman to give the Wolves a 11-5 lead.

The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hudson's RBI single scored Parker who walked earlier in the inning. Bizot hit a ground ball reached on an error that allowed Biggs to score. The third run of the inning came as Hudson scored on a passed ball.

Mississippi Delta took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. A Chad Dudenheter RBI single scored Trojans first run. Murphy's RBI triple tied the game at three-all. Easterling hits a two-run home run to put the Trojans up 5-3.

The Trojans picked up two runs in the top of the fifth and a single run in the top of the seventh to cut the Co-Lin lead to 11-7.

Co-Lin's final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on Estes' RBI single.

Starter Jacob Spinks picked up the win for the Wolves giving up seven earned runs on eight hits, struck out five and walked two in five innings. Micah Parker (Kosciusko/Kosciusko High School relieved Spinks in the sixth. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked none in two innings of work.

Hayden Luke suffered the loss for Mississippi Delta. He allowed eight runs on nine hits and walked three in three innings. Chase Morgan relieved Luke giving up three earned runs on one hit and walked two. Chase Logan pitched two innings allowing two hits and one walk. Casey Burge threw the sixth innings allowing one hit and striking out two.

Co-Lin pounded out 13 hits in the game led by the 4-for-4 performance by Estes (Purvis/Lamar Christian). Hudson had a home run and a single. Harkins and Biggs had a pair of singles. Parker and Freeman doubled. White added support with a single.

For Mississippi Delta, Chapman, Johnson and Murphy had multiple hits. Adding support with a hit apiece were Stallings, Dudenheter, Easterling and Mims.
