Wolves Drop Doubleheader to Pearl River

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed MACCC play hosting Pearl River on Tuesday, April 2. The No. 4 Wildcats swept the Wolves taking game one, 16-1, and game two, 9-0.

GAME ONE

The Wildcats started their scoring early with a solo home run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead against the Wolves. The Wolves then got a two-out walk in the bottom half but could not push the tying run across the plate.

The Wildcats added two runs in the second to increase their lead to 3-0. The Wildcats then added five runs in the third and four in the fourth while keeping the Wolves scoreless despite the Wolves getting two runners on in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 12-0.

The Wildcats then added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to extend their lead to 16-0. The lone run for the Wolves came in the seventh inning as Sam Cook (Shubuta) hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on an error on the play. Cook took third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brentley Berry (Magee) making the score, 16-1. The Wildcats then forced a groundout to end the game and secure the win.

The Wolves totaled four hits as a team with Brentley Berry, Jon David Weed (Terry), Brayden Bankston (Terry), and Sam Cook had one hit each. Berry had the lone RBI for the Wolves.

Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-5 on the season while pitching 2.2 innings and allowing eight runs, all earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts while Craig Bass (Brookhaven) pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with two strikeouts. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched one inning of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Wildcats once again got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning as Hagan Coumbe (Utica) hit a two-out double, but the Wolves could not push the run across.

The Wolves then held the Wildcats scoreless for the second and third innings and then looked to score in the bottom of the third as Brayden Bankston drew a two-out walk to get the offense going. Tucker Jones (Brandon) then singled to put two runners on with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning with no scoring done to keep the deficit at 2-0.

The Wildcats then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the fourth and scored three runs to increase their lead to 5-0. The Wildcats then added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings while keeping the Wolves off the board to secure the game two win and sweep.

The Wolves totaled five hits as a team with Hagan Coumbe and Brentley Berry had two hits apiece while Tucker Jones had one hit.

Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 3-3 overall while pitching four innings allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched three innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk.

Co-Lin moves to 17-21 overall, 5-9 in conference play, and will return to action on the road against Itawamba on Saturday, April 6. First pitch between the Wolves and the Indians is set for 2 p.m., at Roy Cresap Field in Fulton.
