WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hosted Meridian in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9. The Wolves and Eagles split the day with the Wolves getting a 6-5 walk-off win in game one, while the Eagles took game two, 5-2, in extra innings.

GAME ONE

The Eagles used a big inning in the top of the first scoring three runs to take an early 3-0 lead over the Wolves. However, the Wolves responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Brentley Berry (Magee) hit a leadoff double.

Berry then advanced to third on a single by Tucker Jones (Brandon) and then later scored on an error as Jones stole second making the score, 3-1. The Eagles then added a run in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to 4-1 and held the Wolves to five combined baserunners in the second through sixth innings to maintain their lead.

However, the Wolves responded with a three-run bottom of the seventh to tie the game as Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) hit a leadoff double to get the offense going and then later in the inning advanced to third on a wild pitch. McKenzie then scored on a two-out, RBI single by Berry cutting the deficit down to 4-2. Jones then came up and tied the game with a two-RBI inside the park home run making the score 4-4. The Wolves then looked to take the lead as Hagan Coumbe (Utica) and Jon David Weed (Terry) hit back-to-back singles, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.

The Eagles then scored a single run in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead setting the stage for the Wolves to earn a potential walk-off win. The Wolves did exactly that as they scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth as Jones hit a leadoff single to get the offense going.

After Jones stole second, Coumbe reached on an error to put two runners on with no outs. The Eagles then got a groundout out and a line out to put the Wolves down to their final out of the game. Brayden Bankston (Terry) then continued the inning with a single to load the bases with two outs. McKenzie then stepped up and delivered the walk-off hit with a two-RBI double scoring Jones and Coumbe to give the Wolves the 6-5 victory.

The Wolves totaled 14 hits as a team as Tucker Jones led the way with three hits while Brentley Berry, Christian Cameron (Brandon), and Jordan McKenzie had two hits apiece with Hagan Coumbe, JD Weed, Brayden Bankston, Sam Cook (Shubuta), and Sawyer Dunn (Magee) having one hit each. Jones and McKenzie led the Wolves in RBIs with two each while Berry had one RBI.

Tyler Ferguson (Bossier City, LA) got the start and picked up a no decision while pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits with three walks and one strikeout. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) had a career-best outing in a relief appearance while pitching a career-long seven innings and allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) got the win in relief improving to 2-2 overall while striking out the only batter he faced in the game.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day was vastly different for the Wolves as the Eagles scored solo runs in the second and fourth innings to hold a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles held the Wolves hitless until the seventh inning as the seven combined baserunners from the first through sixth innings reached via walk or hit-by-pitch. The Wolves tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh as Lucas Harrington drew a leadoff walk in a pinch-hit appearance. Sawyer Dunn then got the first hit of the game for the Wolves with a bunt single to put two runners on with no outs while an error on the play allowed the runners to advance to scoring position.

Later in the inning, Harrington scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Jones while Dunn then scored as Hagan Coumbe reached on an error tying the game at 2-2. JD Weed then singled to push Coumbe to scoring position as the potential game-winning run, but a strikeout ended the inning sending the game to extra innings.

The Eagles then scored three runs in the top of the eighth punctuated by a two-run home run to retake the lead at 5-2. The Wolves then got a one-out double in the bottom half of the inning, but a caught stealing eliminated the base runner while a two-out single then was hit, but a fielder's choice ended the game and sealed the 5-2 win for the Eagles and split on the day.

JD Weed, Jordan McKenzie, Spencer Wilson (McComb), and Sawyer Dunn got one hit each to represent the four hits as a team for the Wolves while Tucker Jones had the only RBI of the game.
