Wolves Drop Two To Eagles

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to conference action hosting Hinds on Wednesday, April 24. The Eagles swept the Wolves taking game one, 10-3, and game two, 1-0.

GAME ONE

The Wolves got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Brentley Berry and Jon David Weed drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Sawyer Dunn then reached on a fielder's choice bunt while an error on the play allowed Berry to score while Weed took third and Dunn advanced to second.

Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Later in the inning, Weed scored on a sacrifice fly by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) making the score, 2-0. The Eagles then scored one in the second and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead over the Wolves.

The Wolves looked to respond in the bottom of the third as McKenzie drew a walk with one out, but a strikeout followed by a caught stealing ended the inning with the Eagles maintaining the lead. After a scoreless top of the fourth, the Wolves once again got the tying run on in the bottom half of the fourth as Sam Thomas (Madison) hit a two-out single. However, the inning was ended on a groundout stranding Thomas at first while the Eagles held their lead at 3-2.

Once again, the Wolves held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the fifth, and then got the tying one on-base with a two-out single from Dunn. The Eagles were once again able to leave the runner at first as they forced an inning ending pop out to maintain their lead over the Wolves.

The Eagles then scored three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to push their lead to 10-2. The Wolves continued to try and cut into the Eagles lead as Berry and Weed hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. But once again, the Eagles were able to strand the runners forcing a groundout to keep their lead at 10-2.

After a scoreless eighth inning and top of the ninth, the Wolves added one run in the bottom of the ninth as Reise Thomas (Florence) and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Berry making the score, 10-3. The Eagles then ended the game with a flyout by the Wolves to secure the 10-3 win.

The Wolves totaled six hits as Brentley Berry, JD Weed, Sawyer Dunn, Brayden Bankston, Sam Thomas, and Reise Thomas had one hit apiece. Berry and Coumbe led the Wolves in RBIs with one each.

Jordan McKenzie got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-3 overall with the loss while pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) pitched three innings of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with two walks. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits while Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with one strikeout. Tyler Ferguson (Bossier City, LA) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader was scoreless through the first three innings as the teams combined for just three hits, all singles, while the Wolves also hit into two double plays after their two base hits in the first and third innings.

The Eagles scored the lone run of the game on a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth making the score, 1-0. The Wolves continued to battle throughout the game as Sawyer Dunn hit a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth, but a strikeout ended the inning with no scoring done for the Wolves.

The Wolves then threatened the Eagles again in the bottom of the seventh as Jordan McKenzie reached on an error with two outs, but a pop out ended the inning securing the game two victory and sweep for the Eagles.

The Wolves totaled three hits in the game as Brentley Berry, Sawyer Dunn, and Braydon Evans had one hit each.

Coby Gollott (Ocean Springs) pitched a complete game for the Wolves and moved to 6-5 overall with the loss while allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Co-Lin is now 25-25 overall, 13-13 in conference play, and will close out the regular season at home hosting Coahoma on Saturday, April 27, for Sophomore Day. First pitch between the Tigers and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., while sophomore recognition will start at 1:20 p.m.
