Wolves Split Road Doubleheader with Lions

SCOOBA – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed MACCC play by hitting the road to take on East Mississippi on Saturday, April 5. The Wolves and Lions split on the day as the Wolves took game one, 12-4, while the Lions took game two, 12-6.

GAME ONE

The Wolves got on the board first in game one as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first with Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) leading off and reaching on an error. Tucker Jones (Brandon) then followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. After Griffin scored on a passed ball to give the Wolves the lead, Trey Davidson (Brandon) drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jones then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Wesson (Brandon) to increase the lead to 2-0 while a lineout followed by a strikeout ended the inning.

The Wolves then increased their lead with three runs in the top of the third as Davidson hit a one-out single and then advanced to third on a single by Wesson. After Wesson stole second, Davidson scored on an error on the play to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead while Wesson then scored on an RBI-single by Sam Cook (Shubuta) making the score, 4-0. Evan Holifield then hit a fourth consecutive single advancing Cook to third. Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) then hit an RBI-single scoring Cook to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead.

The Wolves then added two runs in the top of the fifth as Holifield drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Brady White (Ethel) then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run, his first of the season, to increase the lead to 7-0.

The Wolves then added a single run in the top of the seventh as White hit a one-out single, advanced to second after a fly out, and then scored on an RBI-single by Reise Thomas (Florence) increasing the lead to 8-0. The Lions then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh making the score, 8-3.

The Wolves added their final four runs in the top of the ninth as Holifield started the scoring by smashing a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run, his third of the season, to make the score, 9-3. Hanlon then drew a walk with two outs to extend the inning. After Hanlon stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, he then scored on an RBI-single by Thomas. Griffin then followed with a single to advance Thomas to third. After Griffin advanced to second on a passed ball, Jones hit a two-RBI single scoring Thomas and Griffin and pushing the lead to 12-3.

The Lions then hit a leadoff triple while a sacrifice fly scored a run to make the score, 12-4. Later in the inning a hit-by-pitch followed by a single put two runners on with one out, but a fly out ended the game to seal the 12-4 victory for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 18 hits in the game as every member of the lineup had at least one hit and one run scored while Tucker Jones led the way with four hits and Brady White had three. Avery Griffin, Trey Davidson, Evan Holifield, and Reise Thomas had two hits apiece while Dylan Wesson, Sam Cook, and Bradley Hanlon had one hit each. White led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Jones and Thomas had two RBIs apiece with Wesson, Cook, and Holifield having one RBI each.

Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start and improved to 2-2 with the win while pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Carter Leggett (Laurel), Darrin Robbins (Sumrall), and Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief each. Leggett allowed one earned run on two hits, Robbins allowed one hit, while Buffalo allowed one earned on two hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Wolves take an early lead with a single run in the top of the first as Avery Griffin hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then took third on a single by Tucker Jones. Griffin then scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Davidson to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

However, the Lions responded with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. The Lions then took the lead with a three-run bottom of the second highlighted by a leadoff solo home run while the score stood at 4-1 at the end of the inning.

The Wolves then cut the lead in half in the top of the third as Jones hit a two-out double and then scored on an RBI-single by Davidson making the score, 4-2. The score stayed at that mark until the Lions took advantage of two errors by the Wolves in the bottom of the fourth and scored four runs to push their lead, 8-2.

The Wolves then added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as Griffin hit a one-out single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Davidson stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 2-2 pitch for a two-run home run, his fourth of the season to cut the lead down to 8-4. The Lions responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 12-4.

The Wolves then looked poised for a big inning as Sam Cook hit a leadoff double while Evan Holifield and Caleb Brooks (Brandon) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout, Reise Thomas dropped a sacrifice bunt scoring Cook while Griffin then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, the inning was ended on a lineout to keep the score at 12-5.

The Wolves then added a run in the top of the seventh as Sam Cook crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center field for a two-out solo home run, his fifth of the season, making the score, 12-6. Holifield then followed with a double, but a pop out ended the inning and secured the game two win for the Lions and split on the day.

The Wolves totaled ten hits in the game as Avery Griffin, Tucker Jones, Trey Davidson, Sam Cook, and Evan Holifield had two hits each. Davidson led the Wolves in RBIs with four while Cook and Reise Thomas had one RBI each.

Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) got the start (2-2) and pitched 3.1 innings while allowing eight runs, four earned, on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Darrin Robbins pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout while Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits. Tanner Blackwell (Flora) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while allowing two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 24-17 overall, 8-8 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Pearl River on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch between the Wolves and the No. 2 Wildcats is set for 3 p.m., at Dub Herring Park in Poplarville.
