Wolves Split Doubleheader with Warriors

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed MACCC play by hosting East Central on Tuesday, April 15. The Wolves and the No. 3 Warriors split the doubleheader as the Wolves took game one, 2-1, while the Warriors won game two, 9-1.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader saw the Wolves take an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first as Tucker Jones (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch with one out to get the offense started. Jones then took second on a groundout by Trey Davidson and then scored on an RBI-single by Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors then tied the game with a single run in the top of the second making the score, 1-1. That score held as both starting pitchers limited the number of runners for either team until the Wolves took the lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Jones hit a leadoff triple to start the inning and then later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Harrington to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves then retired seven straight Warriors batters until a one-out walk in the top of the ninth put the tying run at first base. The Wolves then turned to Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) to close out the game as he struck out the first batter he faced while an error on a stolen base allowed the tying run to reach third. However, Sturdivant then struck out the next batter to secure the 2-1 victory for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled three hits as a team with Tucker Jones, Trey Davidson, and Lucas Harrington had one hit each. Harrington led the Wolves with two RBIs.

Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and improved to 5-5 overall while pitching 8.1 innings and allowing one earned run on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant got his sixth save of the season pitching 0.2 innings of relief and striking out the two batters he faced.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Warriors plate two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. The Wolves looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning as Tucker Jones hit a one-out single while Trey Davidson drew a walk to put two runners on. However, the Wolves then hit back-to-back groundouts to end the inning with no scoring done.

The Warriors then added one run in the top of the fourth and took advantage of a Wolves error to score two in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 5-0. The Wolves then scored their only run of the game as Reise Thomas (Florence) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. Thomas then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Brady White (Ethel), and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Donovan Moore (Bude) to make the score, 5-1.

The Warriors then responded with four runs in the top of the sixth while retiring the Wolves in order in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the 9-1 game two win and split of the doubleheader.

The Wolves totaled three hits as a team with Tucker Jones, Reise Thomas, and Donovan Moore having one hit each. Moore had one RBI for the Wolves.

Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and fell to 8-3 while pitching 3.1 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Lucas Harrington pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two unearned runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts while Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two walks. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) made a relief appearance but did not record an out while allowing two earned runs on two walks.
