WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hosted Mississippi Delta for Sophomore Day on Saturday, April 26. The Wolves swept the Trojans taking game one, 10-8, and game two, 8-2.
GAME ONE
The first game of the doubleheader saw the Trojans plate a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead over the Wolves. However, the Wolves responded with a single run in the bottom half as Sam Cook (Shubuta) and Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Reise Thomas (Florence) then hit a bunt single while an error on the play allowed Cook to score cutting the lead down to 2-1. The Wolves then hit into a double play and a pop out to end the inning before the tying run was scored.
The Wolves then tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the third as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Griffin then took third on a single by Trey Davidson (Brandon) and later scored on an error making the score, 2-2.
The Trojans then scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Once again, the Wolves responded with a solo run in the bottom half as Griffin stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run, his first of the season, making the score, 4-3.
The Wolves then exploded for five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Thomas drew a leadoff walk while Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch, and Caleb Brooks (Brandon) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Griffin then drew a walk, scoring Thomas, and tying the game at 4-4 while Davidson then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Bledsoe, and giving the Wolves a 5-4 lead. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field fence for a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Trojans then scored one run in the top of the eighth cutting the lead down to 8-5. The Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Brooks hit a leadoff single to get the offense started but was then forced out as Griffin reached on a fielder's choice. Griffin then advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a second passed ball to make the score, 9-5. Later in the inning, Harrington stepped up to the plate and crushed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a solo home run, his second of the game and fifth of the season, increasing the lead to 10-5.
The Trojans then scored three runs in the top of the ninth and had two runners in scoring position, but a flyout brought the inning to an end securing the 10-8 victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled ten hits as Avery Griffin and Lucas Harrington led the way with two hits each while Trey Davidson, Sam Cook, Bradley Hanlon, Reise Thomas, Gavin Bledsoe, and Caleb Brooks had one hit each. Harrington led the Wolves in RBIs with four, while Griffin had two, and Davidson had one RBI.
Tanner Blackwell (Flora) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on ten hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the win in relief (9-4) while pitching 2.1 innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with one strikeout. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk while Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) picked up his seventh save while pitching 0.1 innings of relief with one walk.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Trojans score one run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead over the Wolves. That score held until the Wolves plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.
Reise Thomas led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Avery Griffin. Tucker Jones (Brandon) then singled allowing Thomas to take third while an RBI-single by Lucas Harrington scored Thomas to tie the game at 1-1. Trey Davidson then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Harrington to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves then increased their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Bradley Hanlon hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Evan Holifield (Stringer) then stepped up to the plate and crushed a 2-0 pitch over the leftfield fence for a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, increasing the lead to 4-1. Later in the inning, Gavin Bledsoe hit a one-out triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas extending the lead to 5-1.
The Trojans then scored one run in the top of the sixth making the score, 5-2. However, the Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half as Bledsoe led off the inning being hit-by-pitch. Thomas and Griffin then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. After Bledsoe scored on passed ball, Jones hit a sacrifice fly scoring Thomas and making the lead, 7-2. Harrington then hit an RBI-single scoring Griffin and increasing the lead, 8-2.
The Trojans then hit a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout followed by a lineout ended the game securing the victory and sweep for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 13 hits as Lucas Harrington led the way with three hits, while Bradley Hanlon, Evan Holifield, and Reise Thomas had two hits apiece while Avery Griffin, Tucker Jones, Trey Davidson, and Gavin Bledsoe had one hit each. Harrington and Holifield led the Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Jones, Davidson, and Thomas had one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start and improved to 4-2 with the win while allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Co-Lin improves to 30-23, 14-12 in MACCC play, and will wrap up the regular season hosting Meridian on Tuesday, April 29. First pitch between the Eagles and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
