Wheat named MACJC Player of the Week

JACKSON, Miss. - Tyrus Wheat, a sophomore linebacker from Amite, La., earned MACJC Player of the Week honors for his stellar defensive play in a 14-7 win over Northeast in week two of the 2019 season. Wheat put the first touchdown on the board for either team when he took an interception 86-yards for a score in the third quarter to put Co-Lin on top 8-0. The sophomore then helped seal the win with yet another pick with just three minutes left in the contest, halting a would-be Northeast drive. The Amite High School graduate finished the night with six tackles, two tackles for loss, and 100 interception return yards. Wheat is tied for fifth on the team with 10 tackles on the year.

"I'm very honored to receive this recognition because I have been working so hard since the spring," said Wheat. "I could not have done this without God and my teammates though."

Wheat is the first Co-Lin player to land MACJC Player of the Week honors since Jakaiszer Glass got the nod in 2018 after a 10 tackle, one interception performance against then-ranked No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast. The No. 11 Wolves are on the road this week as the team travels to Poplarville to take on the Pearl River Wildcats to open MACJC South Division play.
