Wolves Drop Overtime Contest Against Lawson State

WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Basketball team played host to Lawson State for their home opener on Friday, November 12. The Cougars beat the Wolves, 94-88, in overtime.

The opening few minutes of the first half saw the two teams trading baskets and leads as neither team could pull away; however, the Wolves held a 13-9 advantage with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. The trend continued for the next few minutes as the Wolves slightly increased their lead to 30-23 with around seven minutes remaining. The Cougars outscored the Wolves, 16-14, over the final minutes of the first half, but the Wolves held a 44-39 going into the locker rooms at halftime.

The second half opened with the teams once again trading baskets as the Wolves increased their lead to 51-45 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. The Wolves saw their lead shrink down to just one point over the next few minutes as the Cougars used a 9-4 scoring run to make the score 55-54 with less than 11 minutes left. However, the Wolves responded with a 16-7 scoring run of their own to increase the lead to 70-62 with six minutes to go in the game. The Cougars responded with a 20-10 scoring run over the final minutes including hitting the game-tying three pointer as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime at 80-80.

The Cougars held the Wolves offense to just eight points, while adding 14 to their total to secure the 94-88 win in overtime.

Sophomore guards Kedarius Stampley (Fayette) and AJ Warnsley (Byram? led the Wolves with 19 points each. Stampley added five rebounds, one assist, and three steals while Warnsley had seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Sophomore guard Jordan Marshall (Raymond) finished with a double-double of 18 points and ten rebounds along with one assist and one steal.

Sophomore guards Jemario Hersey (Brookhaven), freshman guard Grevaughn Goodman (Miami, Fla.) had seven points, sophomore center Cole Chapman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and sophomore guard Cameron Bulter (Vicksburg) had five points each, sophomore forward Kareeme Davis (Trenton, N.J.) had four points, and freshman guard Constantine Morant (Hancock) had three points to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

The Wolves are now 1-4 overall and will return to action with a home contest against East Central in non-conference play on Monday, November 22. Tip-off at Mullen Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
