Wolves Falter Against Bulldogs

WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Basketball team played host to Hinds on Thursday, February 3. The Wolves used a frenzied effort but could not complete a come-from-behind effort falling to the Bulldogs by a final of 84-79.

The opening minutes of the first half saw the teams struggle offensively as the game was tied at 5-5 with just under 15 minutes remaining. The Wolves and Bulldogs then began a series of trading baskets as the Wolves gained a small four-point margin, but the Bulldogs fought back and brought the game to a second tie at 19-19 with nine minutes of play left in the first half. The offense picked up for both teams for the remainder of the half as the Bulldogs went on a 17-15 scoring run to take a 36-34 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 13-10 scoring run to increase their lead to 49-44 with just under 16 minutes left in the game. However, the Wolves battled back and cut the lead down to 61-58 with just under nine minutes of play remaining behind the strength of a 14-12 scoring run. The Bulldogs responded with a 11-0 scoring run over the next three minutes and grew their lead to 72-58 with three minutes to go in the game. Despite the Wolves frenzied pace over the final three minutes and outscoring the Bulldogs by a 21-12 margin, the Bulldogs held on for the 84-79 victory.

Sophomore guard Lerenzo Fort III (Jackson) had a season and Wolves career-high scoring night leading all scorers with 40 points. Trey also added in seven rebounds and one assist during the contest. Sophomore guard Jemario Hersey (Brookhaven) also hit double-digit scoring as he added 16 points with four rebounds, and one steal. Fort has now scored 20+ points in 14 of 15 games played with 30+ points scored in six of those games, and this was his first 40-point game of the season, while Hersey has had double-digit scoring two consecutive games and three of the last five games for the Wolves.

Sophomore guard Jordan Marshall (Raymond) had eight points with two rebounds a team-leading five assists and one steal, while sophomore guard Cameron Butler (Vicksburg) and sophomore forward AJ Warnsley (Byram) added five points each. Warnsley also led the team in rebounds and blocks with ten and three respectively along with three assists and two steals. Freshman guard Grevaughn Goodman (Miami, Fla.) had three points and sophomore forward Kareeme Davis (Trenton, N.J.) added two points to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 6-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The Wolves return to conference action on the road against Itawamba. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m., at the Davis Events Center in Fulton.
