Wolves Drop Triple Overtime Thriller to Bulldogs

WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Basketball team played host to Holmes in conference action on Tuesday, January 17. The Bulldogs outlasted the Wolves as the teams needed three overtimes to decide the winner with a 90-83 victory going to the Bulldogs.

The Wolves used the opening minutes to hold a slim, 5-4 margin with 15 minutes of play remaining in the first half. Both teams then added seven points each to their totals over the next few minutes as the Wolves continued to hold a one-point lead at 12-11 with just under ten minutes of play remaining. The Bulldogs responded by outscoring the Wolves, 9-8, to tie the game at 20-20 with close to five minutes left in the first half. The Wolves then closed out the half with a 10-6 scoring run to take a 30-26 at halftime.

The opening minutes of the second half continued to go in favor of the Wolves as they started with a 16-14 scoring run to maintain a six-point lead at 46-40 with under 15 minutes of play remaining. The Wolves then went on a 6-2 scoring run to increase the lead to 52-42 with under nine minutes to play in the second half. However, the Bulldogs responded with a 15-5 scoring run to tie the game at 57-57 with under five minutes of play left in the game. The teams then began a frenetic pace to end the game as they traded baskets and leads in the closing minutes with the Bulldogs holding a late lead 67-65, but freshman forward Dylan Canoville (Plantation, Fla.) scored a tying layup and then swatted a layup attempt by the Bulldogs to send the game into overtime tied at 67-67.

In the first overtime period, the Wolves went on 6-2 scoring run to take a 73-69 lead midway through the period. The Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 scoring run to tie the game at 73-73 and send the game into the second overtime. The two teams traded baskets throughout much of the second overtime; however, the Wolves held an 82-79 lead with a minute and a half of play remaining. However, the Bulldogs once again battled back to tie the game and looked to win it but Canoville again swatted a layup attempt while sophomore guard Jemario Hersey (Brookhaven) came up just short on a game-winning three-point shot attempt at the buzzer sending the game into a third overtime. The third overtime was the tipping point for the Bulldogs as the Wolves had two players foul in the period while being outscored 8-1 as the Bulldogs took the game, 90-83.

Dylan Canoville had a massive game for the Wolves posting a double-double with new career highs in points with 22 and rebounds with 16 along with one assist and seven blocks during the game. Jemario Hersey tied Canoville for the team lead in points with 22 which ties his season high mark while also adding four rebounds, one steal, and four blocks. Sophomore forward AJ Warnsley (Byram) posted his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds along with two assists while sophomore guard Cowandric Samuel hit double digit scoring with 10 points along with five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Sophomore guard Andrew Anderson (Hattiesburg) had eight points with three rebounds and a team-leading six assists while freshman guard Mike Smith (New Albany) had four points and sophomore forward Kaeden Laws (Southaven) added three points to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 7-5 overall, 1-2 in conference play, and returns to action with a road game against Jones on Thursday, January 19. Tip-off between the Wolves and the Bobcats is scheduled for 6 p.m., at A.B. Howard Gymnasium in Ellisville.
