Co-Lin softball wins season opener against Baton Rouge

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College moved to 1-0 on the season Friday with a 12-3 win over Baton Rouge Community College. Co-Lin gave up three runs in the fifth, but plated another two in the bottom half to run-rule the Lady Bears. Co-Lin out hit the Lady Bears 13 to seven.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the second. Makenzie Smith reached base on a fielder's choice and was driven by Paige Hulin.

Co-Lin took that momentum into the second, and put three of the first four batters on base. With the bases loaded, Smith fired a double to center field and plated Julie Scheuermann and Bailey Root. Alex Anthony followed later in the inning with a single that drove in Taylor Bryant. A hit batter gave Co-Lin another run and back-to-back singles from Hulin and Alexsundria Thomas drove in three more for the Lady Wolves a 9-0. Co-Lin squeezed out one more run late in the inning on a wild pitch. Co-Lin led 10-0 going into the third.

Action was slow until the top of the fifth when BRCC drove in three runs on four singles and a sacrifice bunt. Co-Lin answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Root. A Baton Rouge error allowed another run to cross the plate and gave the Lady Wolves a run-rule 12-3 win.

Root took the win for the Lady Wolves. She went four and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out three and walking one. Mackenzie Gros threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Sydnee Mccall took the loss for Baton Rouge Community College. She surrendered five runs on seven hits over two and a third innings.

Co-Lin racked up 13 hits. Hulin, Root, and Scheuermann all collected multiple hits for the Lady Wolves; Hulin led Co-Lin with three hits in four at bats.

Sarah Tate went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Baton Rouge Community College in hits.
