Lady Wolves out pitch Meridian to earn MACJC sweep

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College moved to 7-7 in MACJC play with a sweep over Meridian Community College on Monday night. The 3-0 and 2-0 wins were full of great pitching performances by Bailey Root, Mackenzie Gros, and Christian Black. Game One, W, 3-0

The contest started out as a pitchers duel as Co-Lin's Bailey Root and Meridian's Kaitlyn Parrish limited hits early. Root did not give up her first hit until the top of the fourth when Meridian snuck in an infield single.

Root, a sophomore from Silsbee, Texas, was also focused at the plate as she roped a stand up double to the gap in right field to score Taylor Bryant and Julie Scheuermann. Bryant and Scheuermann reached base on a walk and single respectively. Co-Lin led 2-0 going into the top of the fifth.

The Lady Wolves capitalized in the bottom of the fifth after Callie Fortenberry reached on an error and was moved to third by a double from Alex Anthony. Scheuermann drove in Foretnberry with a shot up the middle to stretch lead to 3-0.

Root earned the victory in the circle for the Lady Wolves. She allowed one hit and zero runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Parrish took the loss for Meridian. She lasted four innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out one.

Game Two, W, 2-0

Game was another pitcher's duel, but the Wolves took advantage of opportunities with runners on the base paths.

The Lady Wolves first run came in the bottom of the third when Callie Fortenberry stole third and came on an error on the throw. Fortenberry reached base with a single to third.

Co-Lin's other run in the bottom of the fourth when a passed ball allowed Tori Pettit to come home. Pettit was pinch running for Julie Scheuermann who reach base on a hard ground ball to right field.

Co-Lin's Christian Black came in the top of the fifth and absolutely shut down the Lady Eagles. She threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Black recorded the last eight outs to earn the save for the Lady Wolves.

Mackenzie Gros was the winning pitcher for Co-Lin. She went four and a third innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out six and walking one.

Fortenberry and Scheurmann each managed two hits to lead the Lady Wolves at the plate, and Co-Lin did not commit a single error. Scheurmann had the most chances in the field with six.
