Lady Wolves Sweep Doubleheader Against Rockets

WESSON - The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action by hosting a doubleheader against Southern Arkansas University Tech on Thursday, March 3. The Lady Wolves swept the Rockets taking game one, 10-3, and game two, 7-0.

Game One

The Lady Wolves wasted no time taking an early lead as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first as Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) hit a one-out single and then stole second. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) then took one swing of the bat and deposited a two-run home run (her third of the season) over the center field fence to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then doubled their lead with another pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) hit a lead-off single and advanced to second on an error. Maxwell then scored on a double by Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) as Dekovic later scored in the inning on a double by Madi Miller (Brookhaven) to give the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead.

The three runs for the Rockets came in the top of the third as they cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 4-3. However, the Lady Wolves responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) hit a lead-off single and advanced to second as Maxwell drew a one-out walk. Wilkinson and Mawell stole third and second respectively and then scored on a two-out, two-RBI double by Malori Cade (Brookhaven). Cade then scored on a single by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) who later scored in the inning on a single by Kivett giving the Lady Wolves an 8-3 lead.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the sixth as Weeks drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a one-out double by Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) while Blanchard was then lifted for a pinch run appearance by Faith Ashley (Brandon). Weeks and Ashley then scored on a single by Dekovic giving the Lady Wolves a 10-3 lead. The Rockets then went three-up-and-three-down in the top of the seventh to seal the 10-3 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves had five players have multi-hit games as Madi Miller, Faith Kivett, Shelbi Maxwell, Bela Dekovic, and Josie Meggs had two hits each while Maddie Weeks, Madalyn Wilkinson, Cera Blanchard, and Malori Cade had one hit apiece. Blanchard, Cade, Dekovic, and Miller had one double each while Weeks had one home run. Dekovic led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Weeks and Cade had two RBIs each with Miller and Kivett getting one RBI during the game.

Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 5-1 on the season with the win. Blanchard pitched a complete game allowing three earned runs on four hits and 1o strikeouts.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader started the same as the first with the Lady Wolves grabbing an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Madi Miller and Faith Kivett led off with back-to-back singles while Miller advanced to third as Kivett was forced out while Madalyn Wilkinson reached on a fielder's choice. Wilkinson then stole second while Miller and Wilkinson both scored on a two-out, two-RBI single by Shelbi Maxwell giving the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Miller led off reaching base on an error. Kivett then reached on an error as Miller (who stole second) scored on the play while Kivett advanced to third. Maddie Weeks then drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kivett then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilkinson as Weeks advanced to third on the play and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Maxwell.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the sixth as Miller got things going with a two-out single and then advanced to third as Kivett reached on an error. Miller and Kivett then scored on a single by Maxwell to make the score 7-0. The Rockets got a lead-off double to start the seventh, but three straight outs ended the inning, giving the Lady Wolves the 7-0 win and sealing the sweep.

The Lady Wolves had three players with multi-hit games as Madi Miller, Faith Kivett, and Josie Meggs had two hits each while Maddie Weeks, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Shelbi Maxwell had one hit apiece. Maxwell led the Lady Wolves in RBIs in game two with three while Weeks had two RBIs, and Wilkinson had one RBI.

Belle West got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 5-0 on the season. West pitched a complete game shutout allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 10-2 overall and the Lady Wolves will return to action with a road doubleheader against Baton Rouge on Friday, March 4. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bears is set for 1 p.m.
