Lady Wolves Sweep Doubleheader Against Lady Bears

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action with a road doubleheader against Baton Rouge on Friday, March 4. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears taking game one, 14-1, and game two, 11-3.

Game One

The Lady Wolves wasted no time in gaining an early lead as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning as Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) got the offense started with a one-out single, stole second, and then scored on a double by Maddie Weeks (Clinton). Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) then drew a walk, while Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) drew a walk with two-outs to load the bases. Weeks and Wilkinson then scored on a two-RBI single by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) to make the score 3-0.

The only run for the Lady Bears came in the bottom of the first as they cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 3-1. The Lady Wolves increased their lead in the top of the third with three more runs as Weeks hit a lead-off single followed by Wilkinson drawing a walk and Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) reaching on an error to load the bases with no outs. Blanchard then drew a walk scoring Weeks, as Wlkinson scored on a fielder's choice by Meggs as Blanchard was out on the play. Maxwell then scored on a groundout by Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) making the score 6-1.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the fourth as they doubled their lead with six runs in the top half of the inning. Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a lead-off single and advanced to third on a double by Kivett while Weeks drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Wilkinson then took one swing of the bat and deposited a grand slam over the centerfield fence for her first home run of the season making the score, 10-1. Maxwell then drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Meggs who also stole second base and then later scored on Miller's second single of the inning making the score 12-1.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the fifth as Weeks hit a lead-off triple and then scored on a single by Wilkinson who then later scored in the inning on fielder's choice by Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) making the score 14-1. The Lady Bears got a one-out single in the top of the fifth, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning and sealed the 14-1 win for the Lady Wolves.

Faith Kivett and Maddie Weeks collected six of the 13 hits by the Lady Wolves as they had three hits each while Madi Miller, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Josie Meggs had two hits apiece, and Laurel Breland (Lake) had one hit during the game. Kivett had two doulbes, Weeks had one double and one triple, while Wilkinson had one home run. Wilkinson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five while Meggs collected four while Miller, Weeks, Cera Blanchard, Julianna Frazier, and Bela Dekovic had one RBI each.

Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 6-1 with the win. Blanchard pitched four innings allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Alli Albritton (Summit) pitched one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader started in the same way as game one with the Lady Wolves taking a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Madi Miller hit a lead-off single with Faith Kivett drawing a walk to put the first two runners on with no outs. Miller then scored on a single by Maddie Weeks while Kivett scored on a single by Madalyn Wilkinson and Weeks later scored in the inning on a passed ball.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with a pair of runs in the third inning as Wilkinson hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a single by Shelbi Maxwell. Wilkinson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Josie Meggs while Maxwell scored on a single by Belle West (Byram) making the score, 5-0. The Lady Wolves added three runs in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 8-0 as Malori Cade (Brookhaven) and Madi Miller hit back-to-back singles while Kivett drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Cade, Miller, and Kivett then scored on a bases clearing double by Weeks.

The Lady Bears scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 8-3. However, the Lady Wolves responded with another three-run inning in the top of the fifth as Meggs hit a lead-off single, stole second, and later scored on a single by Megan Loyd (Brandon). Cade then reached on a fielder's choice as Loyd was out on the play. Cade advanced to third on a double by Miller while both Cade and Miller scored on a single by Kivett making the score 11-3.

The Lady Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, but a strikeout left the runners where they stood, ending the game, and giving the Lady Wolves an 11-3 win in game two and sweep of the doubleheader.

Madi Miller led the Lady Wolves offense in game two going 3-for-4 at the plate while Maddie Weeks and Madalyn Wilkinson had two hits each. Faith Kivett, Shelbi Maxwell, Josie Meggs, Belle West, Megan Loyd, and Malori Cade had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves matched their number of hits from game one with 13. Weeks led the Lady Wolves in game two in RBIs with four, while Kivett had two, with Meggs, West, and Loyd having one each.

Belle West got the start in the circle and improved to 6-0 on the season with the win. In the complete game effort, West allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts, and two walks.

Co-Lin improves to 12-2 overall and the Lady Wolves will return to action hosting Lansing Community College (Mich.) in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
