Lady Wolves Sweep Conference Opener

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team opened conference play hosting a doubleheader against Coahoma on Monday, March 14. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Tigers taking game one, 11-0, and game two, 18-0.

Game One

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a lead-off single and then Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) followed with a bunt single. Miller then scored on a single by Maddie Weeks (Clinton) while Kivett later scored on a wild pitch making the score 2-0.

The big inning of game one came in the second inning with the Lady Wolves scoring five runs as Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) hit a lead-off single then Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) drew a walk. Maxwell then later scored on a single by Miller while Kivett followed up by drawing a walk to load the bases. Miller and Meggs both scored as Weeks reached base on an error while Kivett and Weeks then scored on a two-RBI double by Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) making the score 7-0.

The final four runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as Miller led off reaching base on an error and then later scored on a triple by Weeks. Weeks then scored on a double by Wilkinson. Wilkinson then stole third as Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) drew a walk and was lifted for a pinch runner appearance by Maggie West (Waynesboro). West then stole second while Wilkinson later scored on a groundout by Maxwell and then West later scored on a wild pitch making the score 11-0.

The Lady Tigers got a lead-off single in the top of the fifth, but three straight strikeouts ended the game and sealed the 11-0 win for the Lady Wolves.

Madi Miller, Maddie Weeks, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Shelbi Maxwell all went 2-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett and Josie Meggs added one hit each as the Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits with Wilkinson having two doubles, Meggs with one double, and Weeks with one triple. Wilkinson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Weeks had two with Miller and Maxwell having one RBI each.

Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle and improved to 8-1 with the win. Blanchard pitched four innings with nine strikeouts and one walk. Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL.) pitched one inning of relief allowing one hit with three strikeouts.

Game Two

The Lady Wolves started game two in the same way they started game one taking the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Madi Miller drew a lead-off walk, while Maddie Weeks then drew a walk with one-out. Madalyn Wilkinson then reached on a fielder's choice as Weeks was forced out on the play. Miller then scored on a wild pitch while Shelbi Maxwell drew a walk while Wilkinson also later scored on a wild pitch making the score, 2-0.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the second as they scored eight runs started off with a lead-off double by Megan Loyd (Brandon). Faith Kivett and Weeks then drew back-to-back walks with two outs to load the bases. Loyd then scored as Wilkinson drew a third straight walk, while Kivett scored on a single by Maxwell making the score 4-0. Belle West (Byram) then doubled the Lady Wolves lead with one swing of the bat and deposited a grand slam over the centerfield fence and making the score 8-0. Josie Meggs and Loyd then hit back-to-back singles while Skyler Speights (Monticello) was hit-by-pitch to load the bases once again. Meggs and Loyd then scored on two-RBI double by Mary Ansley Chrestman (Cleveland) making the score 10-0.

The Lady Wolves scored five runs in the bottom of the third as Faith Ashley (Brandon) led off the inning by drawing a walk while Belle West followed up by drawing a walk with one-out. Ashley and West then scored on a double by Lila Blackburn who then scored on a double by Speights to make the score 13-0. Chrestman then drew a walk and then Speights and Chrestman scored on a triple by Kivett making the score 15-0.

The final three runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as Bridjette Talbert (McComb) was hit-by-pitch with two outs and then Blackburn drew a walk. Talbert then scored on a single by Speights as Chrestman followed with another single scoring Blackburn. Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) then drew a walk to load the bases while Speights then scored as Laurel Breland (Lake) was hit-by-pitch making the score 18-0.

The Lady Wolves then secured the 18-0 game two win and sweep over the Tigers with three outs in the top of the fifth inning.

Mary Ansley Chrestman, Megan Loyd, and Skyler Speights had two hits each while Faith Kivett, Shelbi Maxwell, Belle West, Josie Meggs, and Lila Blackburn had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits and drew 13 walks during the game as Blackburn, Chrestman, Loyd, and Speights had one double each, Kivett had one triple, and West had one home run. West led the Lady Wolves with four RBIs, Chrestman had three RBIs, Kivett, Blackburn, and Speights had two RBIs each, while Laurel Breland, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Maxwell had one RBI apiece.

Belle West got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 8-0 on the season with the win. West pitched three innings allowing one hit with seven strikeouts. Alli Albritton (Summit) and Madalyn Wilkinson pitched one inning of relief each. Albritton allowed one hit while Wilkinson allowed two hits with one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 16-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Lady Wolves will return to action with a road doubleheader against Hinds in conference play on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Wolves is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Rene Warren Field in Raymond.
