Lady Wolves Sweep Third Straight Conference Series

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team played host to East Mississippi in a conference play doubleheader on Saturday, March 19. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Lions taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 11-0.

Game One

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a lead-off double and then scored on a single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.). Kivett later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play and then scored on a single by Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) making the score 2-0.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with one run in the bottom of the third as Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) hit a two-out single, advanced to second as Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) drew a walk, and then scored on a fielding error as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) reached base on fielder's choice making the score 3-0. The Lady Wolves added another solo run in the bottom of the fourth as Kivett singled and later scored on a single by Wilkinson making the score 4-0.

The final four runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Maxwell led off with a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Meggs, and then stole home making the score 5-0. Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, Ala.) then hit a single while Mary Ansley Chrestman (Cleveland) followed with a double. After Kivett drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Maddie Weeks (Clinton) hit a two-RBI single scoring Blackburn and Chrestman while Kivett scored on an error during the play to seal the 8-0 win for the Lady Wolves.

Madi Miller, Faith Kivett, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Cera Blanchard all had multi-hit games with two hits each while Maddie Weeks, Shelbi Maxwell, Lila Blackburn, and Mary Ansley Chrestman had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits including one double each for Chrestman and Miller. Wilkinson and Weeks led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs each while Kivett added one RBI.

Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and moved to 10-1 overall in the complete game win. Blanchard allowed one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two

The Lady Wolves got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Belle West (Byram) took one swing of the bat and deposited the ball over the center field fence for a lead-off solo home run (her third of the season).

The Lady Wolves added four runs in the bottom of the third inning as Faith Kivett hit a lead-off single, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by Maddie Weeks. Weeks then advanced to third on a groundout by Madalyn Wilkinson and scored on an RBI single by Shelbi Maxwell making the score 3-0. West then drew a walk while Maxwell and West then stole third and second base respectively. Maxwell then scored on a sacrifice fly Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) while West scored on an RBI single by Josie Meggs making the score 5-0.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as they scored their final six runs of the game. Madi Miller and Kivett hit back-to-back singles to start the inning and then both scored on a two-RBI triple by Weeks who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilkinson making the score 8-0. Maxwell then hit a single and advanced to third on a double by West while both Maxwell and West then scored on a two-RBI double by Dekovic. Maggie West (Waynesboro) was then brought in as a pinch runner for Dekovic and scored on an RBI double by Mary Ansley Chrestman making the score 11-0.

The Lady Lions got a pair of hits in the top of the fifth and had a runner on third, but a groundout ended the game sealing the 11-0 win and sweep of the Lady Lions for the Lady Wolves.

Faith Kivett led the Lady Wolves in game two going 3-for-3 at the plate while Maddie Weeks, Shelbi Maxwell, Belle West, Bela Dekovic, and Mary Ansley Chrestman also had multi-hit games with two hits apiece. Madi Miller, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Josie Meggs had one hit each as the Lady Wolves totaled 16 hits including two doubles for Dekovic, one double and one triple for Weeks, one double and one home run for West, and one double for Chrestman. Weeks and Dekovic led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs each while Wilkinson, Maxwell, West, Meggs, and Chrestman had one RBI each.

Belle West got the start in the circle and improved to 10-0 with the win. West pitched four innings allowing two hits with six strikeouts and one walk while Madalyn Wilkinson pitched one inning of relief allowing two hits with one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 20-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The Lady Wolves will be back in action hosting Southwest Mississippi in a conference play doubleheader on Wednesday, March 23. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bears is set for 4 p.m., in Wesson.
