Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action hosting Southwest in a conference play doubleheader on Wednesday, March 24. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears taking game one, 5-0, and game two, 14-3.

"These girls are so much fun to coach," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "They play hard for one another and leave everything on the field."

Game One

The Lady Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) took one swing of the bat and drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, her fourth of the season.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a one-out single and then Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) followed up by drawing a walk. Weeks then reached on an error loading the bases for the Lady Wolves while Miller and Kivett then scored on a two-RBI double by Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison).

The Lady Wolves added their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) hit a lead-off single and then scored as Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) reached on an error. Dekovic later advanced to third on a double by Miller and scored on a sacrifice fly by by Kivett making the score 5-0.

The Lady Bears stranded a pair of baserunners in both the fifth and seventh innings while being retired in order during the sixth inning as the Lady Wolves secured the 5-0 win in game one.

Madi Miller led the Lady Wolves offense going 3-for-4 at the plate while Josie Meggs had two hits with Maddie Weeks, Madalyn Wilkinson, and Shelbi Maxwell having one hit each as the Lady Wolves totaled eight hits including one double for Miller and one home run for Weeks. Wilkinson led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs while Weeks and Kivett had one RBI each.

Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 11-0 with her fourth straight shutout win (all conference games) of the season. Blanchard pitched a complete game allowing seven hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader got off to a slightly different start as the Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held the lead until the Lady Wolves scored five runs in the bottom of the second.

Cera Blanchard hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson), and then scored the first run of the game for the Lady Wolves on a single by Josie Meggs. Maxwell and Meggs then scored on a single by Bela Dekovic, the fourth straight hit of the inning for the Lady Wolves, making the score 3-2. Dekovic then advanced to second on a single by Belle West (Byram) who was then forced out at second as Miller reached on a fielder's choice advancing Dekovic to third. Dekovic then scored on a passed ball as Miller advanced to second on the same play and then scored on a single by Kivett making the score, 5-2.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the third as they exploded for seven runs as Madalyn Wilkinson drew a walk, Blanchard singled, and Maxwell drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Wilkinson and Blanchard then scored on a double by Meggs while Maxwell then scored on a single by Dekovic making the score, 8-2. Meggs was then out at home as West reached on a fielder's choice as Dekovic advanced to second on the play. Kivett then hit a two-out to load the bases once again for the Lady Wolves. Dekovic and West then scored on two-RBI single by Maddie Weeks while Kivett later scored on a wild pitch making the score, 12-2.

The Lady Bears added their final run of the game in the top of the fourth cutting the lead down to 12-3 while the Lady Wolves added their final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Blanchard hit a lead-off single while Meggs drew a walk. Both runners then stole third and second respectively and scored on a two-RBI single by Dekovic making the score, 14-3.

The Lady Bears got a two-out single in the top of the fifth, but a strikeout ended the inning sealing the 14-3 game two win and sweep of the Lady Bears for the Lady Wolves (their fourth straight sweep to start conference play).

Cera Blanchard and Bela Dekovic led the Lady Wolves offense in game two as both went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett and Josie Meggs had two hits each. Maddie Weeks, Shelbi Maxwell, and Belle West had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled 13 hits with one double each for Blanchard and Meggs. Dekovic led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five, while Meggs added three RBIs, Weeks added two, and Kivett had one during the game.

Belle West got the start in the circle and improved to 11-1 with the complete game win allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

"Our girls played with a lot of passion last night and their energy rubbed off on one another," added Howard. "I am so proud of the total team effort to earn two good wins over a good Southwest team."

Co-Lin is now 22-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play. The Lady Wolves will return to action hosting Holmes in a conference play doubleheader on Saturday, March 26. First pitch between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., in Wesson.
