Lady Wolves Split Doubleheader Against Lady Tigers

BOONEVILLE – The No.1 Co-Lin Softball team returned to action on Friday, April 15 with a road doubleheader against Northeast Mississippi in conference play. The Lady Wolves and Lady Tigers split the pair of contests as the Lady Wolves took game one, 7-1, and the Lady Tigers took game two, 3-2.

Game One

The Lady Wolves wasted no time jumping out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) then took one swing of the bat and drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run (her ninth of the season) making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves then doubled their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Mary Ansley Chrestman (Cleveland) led off reaching base on an error and then scored on an RBI-triple by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.). Kivett then later scored as Weeks reached base safely on a fielder's choice making the score, 4-0.

The Lady Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 4-1. However, the Lady Wolves responded with two runs in the top of the fifth as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) drew a two-out walk and then scored as Weeks reached on an error and advanced to third on the play. Weeks then later stole home and scored giving the Lady Wolves a 6-1 lead.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) hit a lead-off single, advanced from first to third via an error on a bunt by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) making the score, 7-1.

The Lady Tigers were then retired in order in the bottom halves of the sixth and seventh innings sealing the 7-1 victory for the Lady Wolves.

Faith Kivett and Shelbi Maxwell led the Lady Wolves in game one both going 2-for-4 at the plate. Madi Miller, Maddie Weeks, Laurel Breland (Lake), and Mary Ansley Chrestman had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled eight hits including one triple for Kivett and one home run for Weeks. Weeks led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Kivett and Dekovic had one RBI each.

Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 18-2 with the complete game win pitching seven innings allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Tigers keep the Lady Wolves offense at bay allowing just four baserunners over the first five innings while the Lady Tigers scored one run in the second and two runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

The Lady Wolves scored two runs in the top of the sixth as Faith Kivett hit a lead-off single followed up with a single by Madi Miller as Kivett went from first to third on the play. Kivett then scored as Miller was caught stealing making the score, 3-1. Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) later took one swing of the bat and drove a 0-1 pitch for a solo home run over the left field fence (her fifth of the season) making the score, 3-2.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Lady Tigers in order in the bottom of the sixth keeping the score at 3-2. However, the Lady Wolves were retired in order in the top of the seventh securing the 3-2 win for the Lady Tigers.

Faith Kivett led the Lady Wolves offense in game two going 2-for-3 at the plate. Madi Miller, Madalyn Wilkinson, Josie Meggs, and Bela Dekovic had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled six hits including one home run for Wilkinson who also led the team with one RBI.

Belle West got the start for the Lady Wolves and fell to 16-1 on the season pitching four innings allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts. Cera Blanchard pitched two innings of scoreless relief with one walk.

Co-Lin is now 34-4 overall and 20-2 in MACCC play. The Lady Wolves return to action with a road doubleheader against Jones on Wednesday, April 20. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., at Gwen Magee Field at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
