Lady Wolves Win Opening Game in MACCC Softball Tournament

ELLISVILLE – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action taking part in the 2022 MACCC Softball Tournament and faced off against Northeast Mississippi. The No. 5 Lady Wolves beat the Lady Tigers, 2-1.

"I couldn't be prouder of how our group played today," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "At this point in the year, it is all about surviving and advancing. We didn't always swing the bats as well as we are capable of doing, but we did what we had to do to win the game."

Neither team scored in the first three innings despite the Lady Tigers getting two runners in scoring position and the Lady Wolves getting two runners in scoring position in the third inning.

The Lady Wolves broke the scoreless tie with one run in the bottom of the fourth as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) hit a lead-off single, advanced to second as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) reached on an error, and then scored on an RBI-single by Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) making the score 1-0.

The Lady Wolves added their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Weeks hit a lead-off single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wilkinson, and then scored on an RBI-single by Belle West (Byram) during a pinch-hit appearance making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Tigers scored one run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on third base, but Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) struck out Cassidy Duskin to end the game and seal the 2-1 victory for the Lady Wolves.

Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.), Madi Miller, Maddie Weeks, Madalyn Wilkinson, Belle West, and Mary Ansley Chrestman (Cleveland) got one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled six hits. Wilkinson and West also had one RBI each during the game.

Cera Blanchard got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 21-4 overall. The Southeastern Louisiana commit pitched a complete game allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Co-Lin is now 38-7 overall and the Lady Wolves return to action facing off against No. 6 Itawamaba as they continue play in the MACCC Softball Tournament on Thursday, May 5. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., at Gwen Magee Field at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.

"We did a great job of executing in the sixth inning to add a run, which turned out to be the difference in the game for us," added Howard. "Now we have to turn our attention to tomorrow and get ready for a really good ICC team."
