Lady Wolves Steamroll Lady Eagles in Sweep

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action hosting Dyersburg State at Lady Wolves field on Friday, February 10. The Lady Wolves posted double digit hits and runs in both games taking game one 10-0 and game two 15-1 for a sweep of the Lady Eagles.

"We had another stellar day at the plate as a team," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "These girls work so hard and are buying in to our hitting philosophy. It's exciting to watch them on game days and I love that I am able to sit back and let them perform like they have."

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started off with three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) and Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Richardson then scored on the third straight single to start the inning by Skyler Speights (Monticello) giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) then reached on an error to load the bases with no outs while Meggs then scored as Belle West (Byram) drew a walk. Speights then scored on an RBI single by Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) giving the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then scored their final seven runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Hollingsworth hit a leadoff double then West followed by drawing a walk. Hollingsworth then scored on an error after a single by Goodson, while West scores on an RBI single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 5-0. Goodson scored on a one-out RBI single by Maddie Weeks (Clinton) then Richardson took one swing of the bat and smashed an 0-1 pitch to dead center field for a three-run home run and gave the Lady Wolves a 9-0 lead. Meggs then followed with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and then later scored the final run for the Lady Wolves on an RBI groundout by Kat Case (Monticello) making the score 10-0.

The Lady Wolves then secured the 10-0 victory with a quick top of the fifth to end the game.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as Abby Grace Richardson, Bailee Goodson, Josie Meggs, and Faith Kivett had two hits apiece while Madie Weeks, Skyler Speights, and Lizzy Hollingsworth had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs while Goodson, Kivett, Weeks, Speights, Belle West, and Kat Case had one RBI each.

Belle West and Elena Thompson (Water Valley) threw a combined no-hitter in the game for the Lady Wolves as West earned the start and improved to 2-0 on the season. West threw four perfect innings facing only 12 batters with four strikeouts while Thompson threw one inning and had one hit by pitch in her relief appearance. For West, this is the third time in her Lady Wolves career that she has been a part of a combined no-hitter.

GAME TWO

Game two once again saw the Lady Wolves start their scoring in the bottom of the second inning, this time with a pair of runs. Skyler Speights led off the inning being hit by pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lizzy Hollingsworth. Speights later scored on a two-out RBI single by Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, Ala.) who then scored on an RBI single by Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then doubled their lead with another pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning as Josie Meggs hit a leadoff single and then scored on a single by Abby Grace Richardson. Richardson later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Speights making the score, 4-0.

The lone run for the Lady Eagles came on a one-out solo home run in the top of the fourth cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 4-1. However, the Lady Wolves responded with an 11-run bottom half of the inning as Bailee Goodson hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a single by Blackburn. The Lady Wolves then pulled off a successful double steal as Blackburn swiped second and Goodson stole home to give the Lady Wolves a 5-1 lead. Frazier then hit the third straight single to start the inning while Blackburn then scored on a third straight single by Faith Kivett. Frazier and Kivett then scored on a two-RBI single by Meggs who then scored on an RBi single by Richardson making the score 9-0. Maddie Weeks then hit the sixth straight single in the inning for the Lady Wolves.

Weeks was then forced out at second as Hollingsworth reached on a fielder's choice. Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) then took one swing of the bat and crushed a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run giving the Lady Wolves a 12-1 lead. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, La.) and Maggie West (Waynesboro) then hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Elena Thompson then stepped up and smashed the first pitch of her at-bat over the center field fence for the second three-run home run of the inning for the Lady Wolves making the score 15-1. Waguespack then went out to the circle and went strikeout, pop out, strikeout in the top of the fifth to end the game, sealing the 15-1 win, and sweep of the Lady Eagles for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves had 15 hits as a team as Josie Meggs, Abby Grace Richardson, Lila Blackburn, and Julianna Frazier had two hits each while Faith Kivett, Elena Thompson, Maddie Weeks, Sarah Grace Smith, Bailee Goodson, Laney Waguespack, and Maggie West had one hit apiece. Thompson and Smith led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs each while Meggs and Richardson had two RBIs each with Kivett, Speights, Blackburn, and Frazier adding one RBI apiece.

Lila Blackburn got the start for the Lady Wolves in game two and improved to 2-0 with the win. Blackburn pitched four innings allowing one earned run on two hits with eight strikeouts, which is a new Lady Wolves career high for the sophomore pitcher. Laney Waguespack pitched one inning of perfect scoreless relief facing just three batters while striking out two.

"Our pitchers did a phenomenal job against a tough Division I opponent in this doubleheader," added Howard. "The defense was also super solid by making all of the plays behind them."

Co-Lin improves to 4-0 on the season and will return to action on the road at the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18. The Lady Wolves will face off against Marion Military Institute and Southern Union State Community College at 9 a.m., and 11:15 a.m., respectively on Friday, February 17.
