Lady Wolves Stumble in First Day of Sun Chief Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action with a pair of neutral site games as they played in the first day of the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Lady Wolves lost their first game to Marion Military Institute, 10-2, and dropped their second game of the day against Southern Union State, 5-2.

GAME ONE

The Lady Tigers jumped out to a big lead over the Lady Wolves early in the game with a six-run top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. However, the Lady Wolves scored their first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) took one swing of the bat and crushed a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for a leadoff solo home run to cut the lead down to 6-1.

The Lady Tigers then scored their final four runs of the game in the top of the third to increase their lead to 10-1. The Lady Wolves second and final run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) hit a leadoff single, advanced to second when Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) drew a one-out walk, and then scored on an RBI single by Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) to make the score 10-2. Faith Kivett (Tallulah, La.) loaded the bases with a two-out single later in the inning, but a groundout but the potential scoring threat for the Lady Wolves to an end.

The Lady Wolves got a leadoff walk drawn by Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven), but the Lady Tigers then got the next three batters out to end the game and secure the 10-2 win over the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves had six hits as a team as Faith Kivett went 2-for-3 at the plate while Maddie Weeks, Josie Meggs, Skyler Speights (Monticello), and Julianna Frazier had one hit each. Weeks and Frazier had one RBI each for the Lady Wolves.

Belle West (Byram) got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and fell to 2-1 with the loss. West pitched 1.2 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Cara Biswell (Brandon) pitched 3.1 innings of relief allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game for the Lady Wolves got off to a much different start as they scored their first run in the top of the first inning. Josie Meggs drew a one-out walk, stole second, and later scored on an RBI single by Maddie Weeks giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The lead held for the Lady Wolves until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Bison took advantage of two of three total errors by the Lady Wolves and scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. However, the Lady Wolves responded with their second run of the game in the top of the fifth. Faith Kivett hit a one-out bunt single and advanced to second on an error on the play. Kivett then later scored on a two-out RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson. Weeks then singled giving the Lady Wolves two runners on with two outs, but a fly out ended the potential scoring threat.

The Lady Bison then held the Lady Wolves to one hit over the final two innings while adding their final run in the bottom of the sixth once again taking advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves to secure the 5-2 win.

The Lady Wolves had six hits as a team with Maddie Weeks going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, and Zykeria Cole (Magee) had one hit each while Weeks and Richardson had one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) pitched a complete game and picked up the loss for the Lady Wolves moving to 2-1 on the season. Blackburn allowed five runs, one earned, on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Co-Lin is now 4-2 on the season.
