Lady Wolves Sweep Second Day of Sun Chief Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action in their second day at the Sun Chief Classic facing off against Enterprise State Community College and Central Alabama Community College. The Lady Wolves blitzed the Boll Weevils of Enterprise State taking the game, 12-1 in five innings, and then used a come-from-behind effort to beat the Lady Trojans of Central Alabama.

"I am very proud of how our girls bounced back on the second day of the Sun Chief Classic," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "We played very talented teams while we were there, and we have many new faces on the field for us this year. It is early in the season, and we are going through some learning moments. Our girls determination and fight will be big factor for our success as we get deeper into the season."

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started early with a pair of run in the bottom of the second as Skyler Speights (Monticello) drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on a single by Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL), and then scored on an RBI single by Belle West (Byram) making the score 1-0. Blackburn later scored in the inning as Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) safely on a fielder's choice making the score 2-0.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the third as they scored eight runs to blow the game open. Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff double then Maddie Weeks (Clinton) took one swing of the bat and crushed a two-run home run to left field to double the Lady Wolves score to 4-0. Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) was hit by pitch, while Blackburn reached on an error, and West drew a walk to load the bases with one out for the Lady Wolves. Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) was then hit by pitch scoring Hollingsworth while Blackburn and West scored on a two-RBI single by Kivett. Goodson then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) making the score 8-0. Kivett then scored as Richardson reached on an error, who then stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Weeks making the score 10-0.

The Boll Weevils lone run came in the top of the fourth making the score 10-1; however, the Lady Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Elena Thompson (Water Valley) and Ellie Williamson (Jackson) hit back-to-back singles with one out to get the Lady Wolves offense going. Thompson and Williamson would later score in the inning on passed balls to make the score 12-1.

The Lady Wolves then got a quick three-up-and-three-down top of the fifth to seal the 12-1 win.

The Lady Wolves totaled eight hits as a team as Maddie Weeks went 2-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, Lila Blackburn, Belle West, Elena Thompson, and Ellie Williamson had one hit each, Weeks and Kivett led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs each while Josie Meggs and Bailee Goodson had one RBI each.

Belle West got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 3-1 with the win. West pitched four innings allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. Elena Thompson pitched one perfect inning of relief as she faced the minimum and got all three batters out.

GAME TWO

Freshman heroics were the storyline for the Lady Wolves in their come-from-behind win against the Lady Trojans of Central Alabama, who jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Lady Wolves cut the lead down to one with a solo run in the top of the second as Lila Blackburn took one swing of the bat and smashed a full count pitch to center field for a leadoff solo home run making the score 2-1.

The Lady Wolves then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Bailee Goodson hit a leadoff single then Faith Kivett drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Both runners then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Josie Meggs while Goodson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Grace Richardson to tie the game. Maddie Weeks then delivered a two-out RBI single scoring Kivett to give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Wolves lead would be short-lived though as the Lady Trojans scored one run in the bottom of the third to tie the game, and then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to hold a 5-3 lead over the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves once again cut the lead down to one with a single run in the top of the fifth as Goodson hit a leadoff single and later scored on an RBI single by Richardson making the score 5-4.

The Lady Wolves then got out of potential scoring threats by the Lady Trojans in the fifth and sixth innings to leave the score at 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh. The Lady Wolves took the lead with a big seventh inning as they scored their final four runs of the game.

Goodson drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a single by Kivett. Once again Meggs tied the game for the Lady Wolves as she delivered a clutch RBI single scoring Goodson. Richardson then stepped up and gave the Lady Wolves the lead in an emphatic way as she took one swing of the bat and drove a full count pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run making the score 8-5.

The Lady Wolves once again sealed the win with a three-up-and-three-down inning in the bottom of the seventh for a sweep of the day.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as Abby Grace Richardson, Lila Blackburn, and Bailee Goodson all went 2-for-2 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Josie Meggs, Maddie Weeks, Skyler Speights, and Madison Moak (Brookhaven) had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with five RBIs while Meggs, Weeks, and Blackburn had one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching three innings allowing five runs, four earned, with six walks and two strikeouts. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) picked up her first college win moving to 1-0 on the season in a relief appearance. Waguespack threw four scoreless innings allowing just three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 6-2 on the season and will return to action hosting No. 4 Kirkwood on Thursday, February 23. First pitch between the Lady Eagles and Lady Wolves is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
