Lady Wolves Split Day at Hinds JUCO Classic

VICKSBURG – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action as they participated in the Hinds JUCO Classic on Saturday, February 25. The Lady Wolves earned a split on the day as they lost their first game to No. 17 Parkland, 12-3, and then rebounded against Coastal Alabama North for a 4-2 win in their second game of the day.

GAME ONE

The Cobras jumped way ahead of the Lady Wolves early in the game as they scored four runs in the top of the second and three runs in the top of the third to take a 7-0 lead going to the bottom half of the inning.

The Lady Wolves scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) drew a walk and then later scored on an RBI single by Maddie Weeks (Clinton) making the score 7-1.

The Cobras then scored their final five runs of the game in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 12-1. The Lady Wolves then held the Cobras scoreless in the top of the fifth as they looked to fight their way back into the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) started the inning being hit by pitch and then scored on an RBI triple by Faith Kivett making the score 12-2. Kivett then later scored in the inning on Weeks' second RBI single of the game while the Lady Wolves rally was cut short on a groundout sealing the Cobras 12-3 win.

The Lady Wolves totaled four hits as a team as Maddie Weeks went 2-for-2 at the plate while Faith Kivett and Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) had one hit each. Weeks led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs while Kivett had one RBI.

Belle West (Byram) got the start for the Lady Wolves and moved to 4-2 with the loss. West pitched 2.2 innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits with one walk. Elena Thompson (Water Valley) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits with one walk while Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched two innings of relief allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Eagles took an early lead over the Lady Wolves with one run in the top of the first. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Bailee Goodson got the offense going by reaching on an error, stealing second, and then scoring the game tying run on an RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson. Richardson then scored on an RBI single by Maddie Weeks to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead as Weeks advanced to third on the play. Weeks then scored on an RBI groundout by Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 3-1.

The Wolves added their fourth run of the game in the bottom of the second as Skyler Speights (Monticello) hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Kat Case (Monticello) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 4-1.

The Lady Wolves allowed just two hits across the third through fifth innings by the Lady Eagles, who then scored one run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 4-2. The Lady Eagles then got a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout followed by a groundout ended the inning securing the 4-2 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled five hits as a team as Faith Kivett, Bailee Goodson, Abby Grace Richardson, Maddie Weeks, and Skyler Speights had one hit each. Richardson, Meeks, Julianna Frazier, and Kat Case had one RBI each for the Lady Wolves.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves in the circle and pitched a complete game in her first start of the season and earned her first win of the season moving to 1-0. Biswell allowed two earned runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Co-Lin moves to 9-3 overall on the season and will return to action on the road against South Arkansas on Wednesday, March 1. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Stars is set for 1 p.m., in El Dorado, Arkansas.
