Lady Wolves Sweep South Arkansas

EL DORADO, AR – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action this week with a road doubleheader against South Arkansas on Wednesday, March 1. The Lady Wolves used explosive offense on their way to a sweep of the Stars taking game one, 10-1, and game two, 13-0.

"Travelling to Arkansas for games was good for our team," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "We have to get accustomed to traveling multiple hours on the road and then being ready to play when we step off the bus and I thought our girls did a great job doing just that."

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started quickly with three runs in the top of the first as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) got things going by reaching base on an error and advanced to second on the play with one out. Goodson then scored on an RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) who then scored on an RBI double by Maddie Weeks (Clinton) making the score, 2-0. Weeks then later scored on a two-base error to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 3-0.

The Lady Wolves then added a pair of runs in the top of the second as Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) hit a leadoff single and later advanced to third on a single by Richardson. Both Hollingsworth and Richardson scored on two-out, two-RBI double by Weeks increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves added four runs in the top of the fourth as Goodson hit a two-out double and then scored on a double by Richardson. Weeks then took one swing of the bat and crushed a two-run home over the left field fence making the score, 8-0. Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) then drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 9-0.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the fifth as Zykeria Cole (Magee) crushed a leadoff solo home run making the score, 10-0. The lone run for the Stars came in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run with one out. The Stars then got two runners on, but a fly out followed by a groundout ended the inning and sealed the 10-1 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team as Maddie Weeks and Abby Grace Richardson both went 3-for-4 at the plate while Bailee Goodson, Josie Meggs, Lizzy Hollingsworth, and Zykeria Cole had one hit each. Weeks led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five while Richardson had two RBIs with Meggs and Cole collecting one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved 4-1 overall pitching four scoreless innings while allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Elena Thompson (Water Valley) pitched one inning of relief allowing one run on one hit with one walk.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Wolves get their scoring started early once again as they plated seven runs in the top of the first. Faith Kivett (Tallulah) hit a leadoff single then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch while Bailee Goodson drew a walk. Kivett then scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddie Weeks while Goodson later scored on a two-out RBI single by Zykeria Cole making the score, 2-0. Skyler Speights (Monticello) then drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Belle West (Byram) who then advanced to third on the play. West then scored on an RBI single by Josie Meggs while Maggie West (Waynesboro) followed by drawing a walk. Meggs and Maggie West then scored on a two-RBI single by Kivett making the score 7-0.

The Lady Wolves then added four runs in the top of the second as Weeks drew a walk, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Richardson. Richardson then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and then scored on a wild pitch making the score 9-0. Speights then hit a double and scored on an RBI single by Belle West, who then stole second, and later scored on two-out RBI single by Maggie West increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 11-0.

The final two runs of the game came in the top of the third as Weeks smashed a solo home run to left field fence making the score 12-0. Richardson then drew a walk, advanced to second on a single by Cole, and then later scored on a two-out RBI single by Belle West increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 13-0.

The Lady Wolves then held the Stars to three combined hits in the third and fourth innings then sealed the win and sweep with a three-up-and-three-down fifth.

The Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits as Belle West went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett had two hits along with Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, Zykeria Cole, Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs), Skyler Speights, Josie Meggs, and Maggie West having one hit each. Belle West led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Kivett and Weeks had two RBIs apiece with Richardson, Cole, Meggs, and Maggie West collecting one RBI each.

Belle West got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 5-2 overall with two scoreless innings allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Cara Biswell (Brandon) pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing three hits with two strikeouts while Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout.

"It was good for us to see everyone get opportunities to play and compete in these games," added Howard. "We swung the bats well, ran the bases aggressively, and our pitchers and defense did a phenomenal job. It was a long and successful day, but we were happy to bring two wins back with us two Wesson."

Co-Lin improves to 11-3 overall and returns to action with a road doubleheader on Monday, March 6 against Baton Rouge. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bears is scheduled for 1 p.m.
