Lady Wolves Split With Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action with a road doubleheader against Baton Rouge on Monday, March 6. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bears split the day as the Lady Bears took game one, 7-3, while the Lady Wolves rebounded with a game two win, 7-4.

GAME ONE

Errors were the downfall for the Lady Wolves in game one as the Lady Bears took advantage of the first of four total in the bottom of the second inning to plate a pair of runs and take an early 2-0.

However, the Lady Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game as Skyler Speights (Monticello) hit a leadoff double to get things going. Speights then scored on an error after a single by Maggie West (Waynesboro), who also advanced to second on the play. Maggie West then scored on an RBI single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) to bring the score to 2-2. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) drew a one-out walk to give the Lady Wolves two baserunners and a chance to take the lead, but back-to-back outs ended the inning.

The Lady Wolves then took a lead with a single run in the top of the fourth as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) hit a one-out single, stole second and third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Speights.

The Lady Bears then had a big bottom of the fourth as they took the lead with five runs aided by two errors by the Lady Wolves to make the score 7-3.

The Lady Bears then got out of potential scoring jams by the Lady Wolves in the fifth and sixth innings then had a three-up-and three-down top of the seventh to secure the 7-3 win in game one.

The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as a team with Skyler Speights leading the way going 2-for-2 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Zykeria Cole (Magee), Josie Meggs, and Maggie West had one hit each. Kivett and Speights had one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and fell to 4-2 overall. Blackburn pitched 3.2 innings allowing six runs, one earned, on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Belle West (Byram) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day got off to a similar start as the Lady Bears took advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves to score two runs in the bottom of the third for an early 2-0 lead.

However, the Lady Wolves took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs and then never gave it back as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) got things going with a leadoff single. Moak then stole second and scored on an RBI double by Maddie Weeks. Abby Grace Richardson then stepped up and with one swing of the bat crushed a two-run home run to right field giving the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Wolves then doubled their lead with three more runs in the top of the fifth as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) and Madison Moak hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Zykeria Cole then drew a walk to load the bases for the Lady Wolves while Richardson drew a second straight walk scoring Goodson. Moak and Cole then scored on a two-RBI single by Skyler Speights to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 6-2.

The final run of the game came in the top of the sixth for the Lady Wolves as Ellie Williamson (Jackson) hit a leadoff double and then scored on an RBI single by Laurel Breland (Lake) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 7-2.

The Lady Bears then looked to have a big inning in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs, but the Lady Wolves limited the scoring to just two runs on back-to-back outs making the score, 7-4.

The Lady Bears then went three-up-and-three-down in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 7-4 game two win and split for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team with Madison Moak the only player with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate while Bailee Goodson, Elena Thompson (Water Valley), Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, Skyler Speights, Ellie Williamson, Laurel Breland, and Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs, Speights had two RBIs, while Weeks and Breland had one RBI each.

Laney Waguespack got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and moved to 2-0 with the win. Waguespack pitched five innings allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Cara Biswell (Brandon) picked up her first collegiate save with two perfect innings of relief as she faced the minimum number of batters and struck out three.

Co-Lin improves to 12-4 overall and will return to action with their final non-conference games of the season against No. 2 Northwestern Florida State (DI) on Wednesday, March 7. First pitch between the Lady Raiders and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
