Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Bulldogs in Conference Opener

PERKINSTON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action on the road for their MACCC opener at Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 15. The Lady Wolves broke out the bats for a big offensive day in a sweep of the Lady Bulldogs taking game one, 9-1, and game two, 10-2.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got out to an early lead with a solo run in the bottom of the first as Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA), Zykeria Cole (Magee), and Maddie Weeks (Clinton) drew three straight walks to open the game and load the bases for the Lady Wolves. Kivett then scored on a double play, while a fly out ended the inning with the score 1-0.

The Lady Bulldogs then tied the game in the bottom of the first with their only run of the game making the score, 1-1.

The Lady Wolves wasted little time regaining the lead as they scored three runs in the top of the second with the scoring started as Belle West (Byram) took one swing of the bat and crushed a leadoff solo home run to left field making the score, 2-1. Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) then followed with a single and stole second while Madison Moak (Brookhaven) drew a one-out walk. Meggs then later scored in the inning on a two-out RBI single by Cole while Moak then scored on a second straight single by Weeks increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 4-1.

The Lady Wolves were then held scoreless until the fifth inning when they added a single run as Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) was hit by pitch to start the inning, then stole second, and later scored on a two-out RBI double by Meggs making the score, 5-1.

The Lady Wolves then added three runs to their lead in the sixth inning as Moak hit a leadoff single and Kivett followed up by drawing a walk. Cole then stepped up and took one swing of the bat and smashed a line drive three-run home run over the left field fence to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 8-1.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) hit a two-out single, stole second, and the scored as Moak reached on an error making the score 9-1. The Lady Bulldogs then started the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles, but a fly out followed by a double play ended the inning and secured the 9-1 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as a team as Josie Meggs led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Zykeria Cole had two hits with Maddie Weeks, Belle West, Bailee Goodson, and Madison Moak had one hit each. Cole led the Lady Wolves with four RBIs while Weeks, West, and Meggs had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves in the circle and pitched her second complete game win of the season improving to 2-0 overall. Biswell allowed one unearned run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game started very differently than the first game as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first making the score, 1-0.

However, the Lady Wolves quickly responded with six runs in the top of the second as Skyler Speights (Monticello) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Speights then advanced to third on a single by Josie Meggs who then stole second. Speights and Meggs then scored on a two-RBI single by Bailee Goodson making the score, 2-1. Madison Moak and Faith Kivett then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for the Lady Wolves. Goodson then scored as Zykeria Cole reached on an error, while Moak scored as Maddie Weeks reached on a fielder's choice while Cole was forced out on the play making the score, 4-1. Kivett then scored on an RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson while Weeks later scored in the inning on an error increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 6-1.

The Lady Wolves then added three runs in the top of the third as Belle West hit a leadoff double and then advanced to third on a single by Meggs who advanced to second on the play. West and Meggs then scored as Goodson bunted and reached on an error on the play. Goodson then stole second, advanced to third on a bunt single by Kivett, and scored on an RBI groundout by Cole making the score, 9-1.

The final run of the game for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the fourth as Richardson took one swing of the bat and crushed a leadoff solo home run to center field increasing the lead to 10-1.

The Lady Bulldogs then took advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves in the bottom of the fifth to score one run and then had two runners on with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning securing the game two win and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, and Josie Meggs had two hits apiece while Skyler Speights, Belle West, Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL), Bailee Goodson, and Madison Moak had one hit each. Cole, Richardson, and Goodson had two RBIs each to lead the Lady Wolves while Weeks had one RBI.

Belle West got the start for the Lady Wolves in the circle and improved to 6-3 on the season pitching two innings while allowing one earned run on two hits. Lila Blackburn pitched one scoreless inning of relief allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout while Elena Thompson (Water Valley) also pitched one inning of scoreless relief with two walks. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched one inning of relief allowing one unearned run with two walks.

Co-Lin improves to 15-5 overall and will return to action with a road doubleheader against No. 4 Northwest Mississippi on Saturday, March 18. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Rangers is set for 1 p.m. at Ranger Softball Field in Senatobia.
