Lady Wolves Sweep Fourth Straight Conference Series

MOORHEAD – The Lady Wolves hit the road once again this week to face off against conference opponent Mississippi Delta on Saturday, April 1. The Lady Wolves swept the doubleheader against the Lady Trojans taking game one, 10-2, and game two, 15-0.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got on the board early with a single run in the top of the first as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a play, and then scored on a two-out RBI double by Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) making the score, 1-0.

The Lady Wolves then added another single run in the top of third as Meggs and Maddie Weeks hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Meggs was then caught stealing third, but Weeks swiped second on the play and then scored on Richardson's second RBI double of the game making the score, 2-0.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the fourth as they scored six runs with Skyler Speights (Monticello) getting things started with a leadoff double while Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) followed up by drawing a walk. Spieghts then scored on an RBI single by Madison Moak making the score, 3-0 while Goodson advanced to third and Moak took second on the play. Both Goodson and Moak then scored on a one-out, two RBI single by Meggs. Weeks then followed by drawing a walk while Meggs then scored on the third RBI double of the game for Richardson making the score, 6-0. Weeks and Richardson then scored on two RBI double by Belle West (Byram) to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 8-0.

The Lady Trojans then scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Lady Wolves responded with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth as Meggs led off reaching base on an error and advanced to third on a single by Weeks who also took second on the play. Meggs then scored on an RBI groundout by Laurel Breland (Lake) while Weeks later scored in the inning as Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) reached base on an error making the score, 10-2.

The Lady Trojans then got a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but back-to-back outs ended the inning, sealing the game one win, 10-2, for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as Abby Grace Richardson led the way going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with all three hits being doubles. Josie Meggs, Maddie Weeks, and Madison Moak all had two hits each while Meggs also reached base safely in every plate appearance for the second straight game for the Lady Wolves. Belle West and Skyler Speights had one hit apiece. Richardson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Meggs and West had two RBIs each with Moak and Laurel Breland adding one RBI each during the game.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 6-1 overall pitching 5.1 scoreless innings allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts. Elena Thompson (Water Valley) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits with two walks.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Lady Wolves score in all five innings of play starting with their biggest inning in the first where they scored seven runs.

The Lady Wolves got three straight triples to start the game from Josie Meggs, Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA), and Maddie Weeks making the score, 2-0. Weeks then scored on an RBI double by Richardson, her fourth RBI double of the day, making the score 3-0. Richardson then advanced to third on a one-out single by Zykeria Cole (Magee) who then stole second later in the inning. Richardson and Cole then later scored in the inning on a two-out, two RBI single by Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) making the score, 5-0. Frazier then advanced to second on a single by Madison Moak while both then scored on two-out, two RBI double by Meggs increasing the score to 7-0.

The Lady Wolves then added three runs in the top of the second as Weeks hit a leadoff double and then advanced to third as Richardson reached on a fielder's choice. Weeks then scored as Cole reached on an error while Skyler Speights hit a bunt single to load the bases with one out for the Lady Wolves. Richardson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Frazier while Cole scored as Moak reached base on an error increasing the lead to 10-0.

The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the third as Kivett hit a leadoff single and then scored on a three-base error on the play. Weeks followed with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Richardson making the score, 12-0. The Lady Wolves added a solo run in the fourth as Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a single by Moak and then scored on an RBI groundout by Ellie Williamson (Jackson) making the score, 13-0.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the fifth as Elena Thompson hit a leadoff single followed up with a double by Laurel Breland. Thompson then scored on an RBI single by Belle West while Breland later scored as Sarah Grace Smith reached on a fielder's choice increasing the score to 15-0.

The Lady Wolves then forced a three-up-and-three-down bottom of the fifth by the Lady Trojans to secure the game two win, 15-0, and sweep of the doubleheader.

The Lady Wolves totaled 17 hits as Maddie Weeks went 3-for-3 at the plate while Josie Meggs, Faith Kivett, Madison Moak had two hits apiece. Elena Thompson, Laurel Breland, Abby Grace Richardson, Belle West, Zykeria Cole, Skyler Speights, Julianna Frazier, and Lila Blackburn had one hit each. Frazier led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Meggs and Richardson had two RBIs each with Ellie Williamson, Weeks, Belle West, Cole, and Smith having one RBI each during the game.

Lila Blackburn got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 6-2 overall pitching three innings allowing just one hit with six strikeouts. Belle West pitched one inning of relief allowing two hits with two strikeouts while Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched one inning of relief with two strikeouts.

"Our bats were on fire during these games and the defense played solid behind our pitchers who were excellent in the circle," said Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "We are playing team ball at a high level, and it is fun to be a part of this and see our team be successful on the field at all levels."

Co-Lin improves to 23-7 overall, 8-2 in conference play, and will return to action on Tuesday, April 4 hosting No. 11 Pearl River. First pitch between the Lady Wildcats and the Lady Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
