Lady Wolves Split With Lady Wildcats

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to MACCC action hosting a Top-15 matchup against No. 13 Pearl River. The Lady Wildcats and Lady Wolves split the doubleheader as the Lady Wolves took game one, 9-5, while the Lady Wildcats took game two, 4-1.

GAME ONE

The first game of the day saw the Lady Wildcats take an early lead as they scored one run in the top of the second inning while holding the Lady Wolves scoreless through the first two innings to maintain the 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then responded in a big way with a five-run bottom of the third as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single followed by Madison Moak (Brookhaven) drawing a walk to start the inning with two runners on and no outs. Both runners then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) and then scored on a two RBI single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) giving the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) then reached on a fielder's choice while Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Kivett then scored on an RBI single by Belle West (Byram) while Weeks and Richardson scored on a two RBI double by Zykeria Cole (Magee) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 5-1.

The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Kivett hit a two-out double and then scored on an RBI single by Weeks. Weeks then scored on an RBI double by Richardson giving the Lady Wolves a 7-1 lead. The Lady Wildcats cut into the Lady Wolves lead with three runs in the top of the sixth to make the score, 7-4.

However, the Lady Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kivett drew a walk and then Weeks reached on a fielder's choice while an error on the play allowed both Kivett and Weeks to score increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 9-4.

The Lady Wildcats added one run in the top of the seventh and looked to add more, but a fly out ended the inning, sealing the game one win, 9-5, for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled eight hits as Faith Kivett and Belle West had two hits apiece while Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, Zykeria Cole, and Bailee Goodson had one hit each. Kivett and Cole had two RBIs each to lead the Lady Wolves while Weeks, Richardson, and West had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 7-1 overall. Biswell pitched 5.2 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) earned her third save of the season pitching 1.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on four hits.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw a pitcher's duel break out as both starters gave up just one combined hit in the first three innings. Once again, the Lady Wildcats took an early lead with a single run in the top of the fourth and held the Lady Wolves scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to maintain the 1-0 lead.

However, the Lady Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game as Skyler Spegihts (Monticello) drew a walk while Bailee Goodson and Madison Moak hit back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases with one out. Speights then scored on a sacrifice fly by Josie Meggs making the score 1-1.

That score held until the top of the seventh when the Lady Wildcats took advantage of miscues by the Lady Wolves defense and scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lady Wolves then got a baserunner with one out, but a fly out followed by a line out ended the inning sealing the game two win for the Lady Wildcats and the split of the doubleheader.

The Lady Wolves totaled three hits as a team with Madison Moak getting two hits while Bailee Goodson had one hit. Josie Meggs had one RBI for the Lady Wolves.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start for the Lady Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching four innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts. Belle West picked up the loss in a relief appearance moving to 6-5 overall while pitching three innings allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 24-8 overall, 11-3 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Meridian on Wednesday, April 12. First pitch between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Wolves is set for 4 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
