Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Eagles

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to MACCC action hosting Meridian on Wednesday, April 12. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Eagles taking game one, 5-2, and game two, 10-3.

"It was great for our team to get two more wins in conference play and gain more momentum heading into the back end of the regular season," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got on the board early as they scored one run in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) hit a two-out single and then scored on an RBI triple by Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) making the score, 1-0.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with two runs in the bottom of the second as Kat Case (Monticello) reached base after a dropped third strike. Case then scored on an RBI triple by Madison Moak (Brookhaven and then later scored in the inning by stealing home making the score, 3-0.

The Lady Wolves added another solo run in the third as Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) hit a leadoff triple and then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Belle West making the score, 4-0. The Lady Eagles then took advantage of two errors by the Lady Wolves in the top of the fourth and scored two runs cutting the Lady Wolves lead in half at 4-2.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as Zykeria Cole (Magee) hit a leadoff single then Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) and Moak hit back-to-back singles with one out to load the bases. Cole then scored on a sacrifice fly by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) making the score, 5-2. The Lady Wolves then allowed just two combined baserunners for the Lady Eagles over the final three innings including a three-up-and-three-down top of the seventh to seal the game one win.

The Lady Wolves totaled seven hits as a team with Madison Moak leading the way going 2-for-2 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, Zykeria Cole, and Julianna Frazier had one hit each. Moak, Richardson, Josie Meggs, and Belle West had one RBI each for the Lady Wolves.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and picked up the win with the complete game effort moving to 8-1 on the season while allowing two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Lady Wolves jump out to an early lead with one run in the bottom of the second as Belle West led off reaching base on an error and reached second on the play. Zykeria Cole was then hit-by-pitch while West then scored on an RBI single Skyler Speights (Monticello) making the score, 1-0.

The big inning for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the third as they exploded for five runs. Faith Kivett hit a leadoff single and then scored on an RBI double by Maddie Weeks. Abby Grace Richardson then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a two-run home run to center field making the score, 4-0. West then followed with a single and then later advanced to second on a one-out single by Speights. West then scored on an RBI double by Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) while Speights then scored on a sacrifice fly by Madison Moak making the score, 6-0.

The Lady Eagles then scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the Lady Wolves lead in half at 6-3. However, the Lady Wolves responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead.

Moak hit a leadoff single while Josie Meggs reached base on an error. Both Moak and Meggs then scored on a two-RBI triple by Kivett who then scored on an error during the play making the score, 9-3. Richardson then stepped up with one out on the board and crushed the first pitch of the at-bat for a solo home run, her second home run of the game, increasing the lead to 10-3.

The Lady Eagles then had a three-up-and-three-down top of the seventh to seal the game two win and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 13 hits as Josie Meggs, Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, and Skyler Speights had two hits apiece while Maddie Weeks, Belle West, Lila Blackburn, Zykeria Cole, and Madison Moak had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs while Kivett, Weeks, Speights, Blackburn, and Moak had one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 7-2 overall with the win while pitching 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with three walks while Belle West pitched one inning of relief facing just three batters while striking out two.

Co-Lin improves to 26-8 overall, 13-3 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Holmes on Saturday, April 15. First pitch between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Wolves is set for 1 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
