Lady Wolves Walk Off Game One During Sweep of Holmes

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves returned to action hosting Holmes on Sunday, April 16. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bulldogs with a walk off win in game one, 6-5, and then had an offensive explosion in the game two win, 12-4.

GAME ONE

A pitcher's duel broke out over the first two innings of game one as the starters for each team allowed just three combined baserunners. However, the Lady Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third thanks to a pair of two-run home runs to make the score, 4-0.

The Lady Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Meggs advanced to second on a single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) and then scored on an RBI double by Maddie Weeks (Clinton). Kivett then scored on an RBI groundout by Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) cutting the Lady Bulldogs lead in half at 4-2.

The Lady Wolves then allowed just one baserunner for the Lady Bulldogs over the next two innings and tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single to get things going for the Lady Wolves and then scored as Meggs reached on an error on a bunt and advanced to third on the play. Meggs then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kivett tying the game at 4-4.

The Lady Bulldogs then scored one run in the top of the sixth behind a leadoff triple and a one-out RBI single to regain the lead at 5-4 and then held the Lady Wolves scoreless in the bottom half to maintain their lead. After a three-up-and-three-down top of the seventh, the Lady Wolves had the stage set for another walk off win in the bottom half of the inning.

Once again, Meggs got the offense started by drawing a walk with one out on the board. Kivett then followed with a double giving the Lady Wolves two runners in scoring position. Weeks then stepped up and delivered the walk off hit with a two-RBI single to centerfield securing the 6-5 game one win.

The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as a team as Faith Kivett led the way going 3-for-3 at the plate with Maddie Weeks adding two hits while Madison Moak had one hit. Weeks led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Kivett and Abby Grace Richardson had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 9-1 with the complete game victory allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts.

"I am so proud of our girls with the resiliency and mental toughness they displayed in game one," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "The girls stayed mentally strong during that game and did not give up which helped to propel us to come back and get a walk off win."

GAME TWO

The second game of the day got off to a much quicker scoring start as the Lady Bulldogs used a two-out RBI single and two-run home run to take an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Lady Wolves matched the Lady Bulldogs with a three-run bottom of the first to tie the game.

Josie Meggs hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout, and then took third as Maddie Weeks reached on an error. Meggs then scored on an RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson making the score, 3-1. Belle West (Byram), Zykeria Cole (Magee), and Skyler Speights (Monticello) hit three straight singles with Cole and Speights collecting RBIs on their hits as Richardson and West scored respectively and tying the game at 3-3.

After holding the Lady Bulldogs silent in the top of the second, the Lady Wolves exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Madison Moak led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Meggs, and then scored on an RBI-single by Kivett giving the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead. Weeks then cleared the bases with an RBI-triple scoring Meggs and Kivett while Richardson then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch she saw to centerfield for a two-run home run increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 8-3.

The Lady Bulldogs then scored their final run of the game with a two-out solo home run in the top of the third to cut the lead down to 8-4. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a single run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Moak hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kivett, and then scored on a one-out RBI-single by Weeks increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 9-4.

The Lady Wolves scored their final three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Cole drew a leadoff walk while Speights followed with a double then Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Laurel Breland (Lake) then made a pinch-hit appearance and hit a sacrifice fly scoring Cole while back-to-back RBI singles by Kivett and Weeks scored Speights and Blackburn to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 12-4.

The Lady Wolves then forced a three-up-and-three-down top of the fifth to secure the game two win and sweep of the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Wolves totaled 15 hits as a team with each member of the starting lineup safely reaching base during the game. Maddie Weeks led the way for the Lady Wolves going 3-for-4 at the plate while Josie Meggs, Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, Skyler Speights, and Madison Moak added two hits each with Belle West and Zykeria Cole adding one hit each. Weeks led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Richardson had three RBIs along with Laurel Breland, Kivett, Cole, and Speights adding one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 8-2 overall with the complete game win allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 28-8 overall, 15-3 in conference play, and will return to action on the road against Southwest on Tuesday, April 18. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bears is scheduled for 3 p.m., in Summit.
