Lady Wolves Pitch Back-To-Back Shutouts in Sweep of Lady Lions

SCOOBA – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed conference play with a road doubleheader against East Mississippi on Saturday, April 22. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Lions allowing no runs and just two hits through both games taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 11-0.

"These games were fun for us and the team," said Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "I am super proud of the performance from our pitching staff in these wins."

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves started their scoring off with three runs in the top of the first as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) making the score, 1-0. Maddie Weeks (Clinton) followed with a single while Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) reached on an error to load the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flys by Belle West (Byram) and Zykeria Cole (Magee) scored Weeks and Richardson giving the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves added three more runs in the top of the third as Weeks hit a leadoff double while Richardson stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed an 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run. West and Cole then reached on back-to-back errors putting both in scoring position while West later scored in the inning on another error making the score, 6-0.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a one-out bunt single. After Moak advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third, Meggs drew a walk to put two baserunners on with one out. Moak then scored on an RBI single by Kivett while Meggs later scored on a sacrifice fly by Weeks making the score, 8-0.

The Lady Wolves then allowed one baserunner via an error and then recorded three straight outs to seal the win.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as Faith Kivett, Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, and Madison Moak had two hits each while Josie Meggs had one hit. Kivett and Richardson led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs apiece while Weeks, Belle West, and Zykeria Cole had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 11-1 with a complete game no-hitter win with one walk and six strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader once again saw the Lady Wolves jump out to an early lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first. Faith Kivett got the offense going with a one-out single, advanced to second on a groundout, and then scored as Abby Grace Richardson reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Richardson then scored after an error on a single by Belle West making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the top of the third as Weeks and Richardson hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. The Lady Wolves then pulled off a double steal as Weeks took third while Richardson swiped second with Weeks then scoring on a sacrifice fly by West making the score, 3-0. Skyler Speights (Monticello) then drew a two-out walk, while Richardson later scored on an error after a single by Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) making the score, 4-0.

The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the top of the fourth as Josie Meggs hit a one-out single while Kivett reached on an error to put two runners on. Weeks then reached on a fielder's choice while Meggs was forced out on the play while Kivett and Weeks scored on a two-out, two RBI double by Richardson making the score, 6-0. The Lady Wolves added a single run in the top of the fifth as Speights reached on an error and then was replaced by Kat Case (Monticello) as a pinch-runner. Case advanced two bases on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Phillips and Madison Moak and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Meggs making the score, 7-0.

The final four runs for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Weeks hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a double by Richardson. Both then scored on a two RBI triple by West who then scored on an RBI single by Cole making the score, 10-0. Ellie Williamson (Jackson) then hit a pinch-hit single while West later scored on an RBI groundout by Moak later in the inning making the score, 11-0.

The Lady Wolves then forced a three-up-and-three-down bottom of the sixth to secure the game two win and sweep over the Lady Lions.

The Lady Wolves totaled 15 hits as Abby Grace Richardson and Belle West led the way with three hits apiece while Josie Meggs, Maddie Weeks, and Leia Phillips adding two hits each with Faith Kivett, Zykeria Cole, and Ellie Williamson having one hit each. West led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Richardson had two RBIs with Meggs, Phillips, Zykeria Cole and Madison Moak adding one RBI each during the game.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 9-2 overall while pitching five inning and allowing two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Belle West pitched the final inning of the combined shutout retiring all three batters she faced.

"Cara with the no-hitter is so impressive because that is a tough feat to accomplish against any team in our conference," stated Howard. "Lila and Belle were also impressive with their combined shutout in game two."

Co-Lin improves to 32-8 overall, 19-3 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Hinds on Tuesday, April 25. First pitch between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Wolves is scheduled for 4 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.

"I am excited to the field with this special group again twice this week starting on Tuesday," added Howard.
