Lady Wolves Earn Fifth Straight Sweep in Conference Play Against Lady Eagles

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed MACCC action playing host to Hinds on Tuesday, April 26. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Eagles taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 13-1.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves wasted no time starting their scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) reached on an error with two outs. Abby Grace Richardson then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the bottom of the second as Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) hit a leadoff single, stole second, and then advanced to third on a bunt single by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) with one out. Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) drew a walk to load the bases. Phillips then scored on a sacrifice fly by Weeks while Meggs scored on an error during the play to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 4-0.

The Lady Wolves scored two more runs in the bottom of the third as Zykeria Cole (Magee) stepped up with one out on the board, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for a solo home run making the score, 5-0. Skyler Speights (Monticello) then drew a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, and then scored on an RBI single by Phillips making the score, 6-0.

The Lady Wolves added a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Kivett drew a leadoff walk, stole second, stole third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole making the score, 7-0. The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Kivett drew a walk with two outs, stole second, and then scored as Weeks reached on an error to end the game with an 8-0 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled five hits as a team with Leia Phillips leading the way going 2-for-3 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Abby Grace Richardson, and Zykeria Cole had one hit each. Richardson and Cole led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs apiece while Phillips and Maddie Weeks had one RBI each during the game.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 12-1 with the win throwing her second straight complete game no-hitter shutout with nine strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game saw the Lady Wolves jump out to a big lead as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the first.

Josie Meggs and Faith Kivett drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and then both advanced to third and second respectively on a double steal. Meggs then scored as Weeks reached on an error making the score, 1-0. After Weeks stole second, both she and Kivett scored on a two-RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson making the score, 3-0. Richardson then scored on an RBI double by Belle West (Byram) who then scored on an RBI single by Zykeria Cole making the score, 5-0. Cole then advanced to second and a groundout and then scored on an RBI single by Leia Phillips. Phillips advanced to second on a bunt single by Madison Moak (Brookhaven) but then was forced out as Meggs reached on a fielder's choice. Moak then scored as Kivett reached on an error making the score, 7-0.

The Lady Wolves added three more runs in the bottom of the second as Richardson stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 8-0. West then followed with a single and later advanced to second on a one-out single by Skyler Speights. West then scored on an RBI single by Phillips. The Lady Wolves then pulled off a double steal as Phillips stole second while Speights stole home making the score, 10-0.

The Lady Wolves scored three more runs in the bottom of the third as Julianna Frazier (Bogue Chitto) got the offense going with a one-out single and then scored on a pinch-hit RBI double by Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) making the score, 11-0. Elena Thompson (Water Valley) then drew a walk with two outs in a pinch-hit appearance while both Smith and Thompson scored as Ellie Williamson (Jackson) reached on an error making the score, 13-0.

The lone run for the Lady Eagles came in the top of the fifth on a two-out single, but the Lady Wolves then recorded the third out throwing out an advancing runner on the play to seal the game two win and sweep.

The Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Abby Grace Richardson, Belle West, and Leia Phillips had two hits each while Laurel Breland, Julianna Frazier, Sarah Grace Smith, Zykeria Cole, Skyler Speights, and Madison Moak had one hit apiece. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs, Phillips had two RBIs, while Weeks, Smith, West, and Cole had one RBI each.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 10-2 with the win while pitching three scoreless innings allowing two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) pitched two innings of relief allowing one run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 34-8 overall, 21-3 in conference play, and will return to action with their 2023 regular season home finale on Friday, April 28, hosting Coahoma for Sophomore Day. First pitch between the Lady Tigers and the Lady Wolves is set for 3 p.m. at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
