Lady Wolves Celebrate Sophomore Day with Sweep of Lady Tigers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team wrapped up the home portion of the 2023 regular season with Sophomore Day while hosting Coahoma. The Lady Wolves allowed just two hits in the sweep of the Lady Tigers taking game one, 12-0, and game two, 17-0.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started with five runs in the bottom of the second as Belle West (Byram) drew a leadoff walk. Zykeria Cole (Magee) then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead. Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) hit a one-out double and after she advanced to third on a wild pitch, Madison Moak (Brookhaven) drew a walk to put runners on the corners.

Cole then scored on an RBI single by Meggs while the Wolves then pulled off a double steal as Moak swiped third and Meggs stole second behind her. Moak then scored on an error while Meggs took third on the play and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) making the score, 5-0.

The Lady Wolves added four runs in the bottom of the third as Abby Grace Richardson led off the inning crushing a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run increasing the lead to 6-0. Belle West then drew a walk, Cole singled, and Skyler Speights (Monticello) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Leia Phillips then reached on a fielder's choice as Belle West was forced out on the play while Phillips was then forced out as Moak reached on fielder's choice. Meggs then cleared the bases with a three RBI double scoring Cole, Speights, and Moak increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 9-0.

The final three runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as Richardson drew a leadoff walk while Laurel Breland (Lake) was hit-by-pitch. Richardson was then forced out as Julianna Frazier reached on a fielder's choice. Breland then scored on an RBI single by Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) while Frazier advanced to third and Hollingsworth advanced to second on the play. Maggie West (Waynesboro) then hit a two-RBI triple scoring Frazier and Hollingsworth making the score, 12-0.

The Lady Tigers then got a single to start the top of the fifth, but two strikeouts along with an out on a baserunning appeal ended the inning securing the game one win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as a team with Josie Meggs and Zykeria Cole having two hits apiece while Maddie Weeks (Clinton), Abby Grace Richardson, Lizzy Hollingsworth, Leia Phillips, and Maggie West had one hit each. Meggs led the Lady Wolves with four RBIs while Cole and Maggie West had two RBIs apiece with Faith Kivett, Richardson, and Hollingsworth had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 13-1 overall pitching four innings while allowing one hit with five strikeouts. Belle West pitched one inning of relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started early in game two as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning while scoring eight runs. Josie Meggs hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second on an error to get things started for the Lady Wolves.

Meggs then scored on an RBI single by Faith Kivett who advanced to second on the play. After Kivett stole third and then scored on an error, Maddie Weeks drew a walk. Abby Grace Richardson then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch of the at-bat over the center field fence for a two-run home run, her fourth home run of the week, making the score 4-0. The Lady Wolves then went back-to-back home runs a Belle West hit an inside the park home run to increase the lead to 5-0. Zykeria Cole and Skyler Speights hit back-to-back while both then advanced on a double steal as Cole stole third and Speights swiped second behind her. Cole then scored as Moak reached on a fielder's choice bunt. The Lady Wolves once again pulled off a double steal as Moak stole second and then Speights swiped home on the throw making the score, 8-0.

The Lady Wolves then added one run in the bottom of the second as Richardson reached second on a two-base error with one out and then scored on an RBI double by Belle West making the score, 9-0.

The Lady Wolves then had a second inning where they sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third scoring seven runs as Lizzy Hollingsworth hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hollingsworth then scored on an RBI single by Meggs while Kivett followed with a single as Meggs advanced to third on the play. The Lady Wolves then pulled off a third double steal as Kivett stole second while Meggs swiped home and scored on the play making the score 11-0. Maddie Weeks then hit a double advancing Kivett to third while both then scored on a two RBI single by Laurel Breland while Maggie West then followed with a single. After Breland was called out on a baserunning appeal, Julianna Frazier reached on an error while Maggie West advanced to third on the play. After Frazier advanced to second on a passed ball, Maggie West scored on an RBI single by Speights making the score, 14-0. Frazier then scored on an RBI groundout by Elena Thompson (Water Valley) while Speights then scored on an RBI double by Hollingsworth, her second double of the inning, making the score, 16-0.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fourth as Kat Case (Monticello) and Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) hit back-to-back singles with one out. Case then later scored in the inning on a two-out RBI single by Maggie West making the score, 17-0. The Lady Wolves then forced a three-up-and-three-down top of the fifth to secure the game two win and sweep over the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Wolves totaled 21 hits as a team with Josie Meggs and Faith Kivett leading the way going 3-for-3 at the plate while Belle West, Maggie West, Skyler Speights, and Lizzy Hollingsworth had two hits apiece with Kat Case, Maddie Weeks, Laney Waguespack, Abby Grace Richardson, Laurel Breland, Zykeria Cole, and Madison Moak adding one hit each. Meggs, Richardson, Breland, and Belle West had two RBIs apiece while Kivett, Maggie West, Speights, Elena Thompson, Moak, and Hollingsworth had one RBI each.

The Lady Wolves got a combined no-hitter in the game two win from their pitching staff as Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start and improved to 11-2 pitching three innings with four strikeouts while Elena Thompson pitched the final two innings in relief with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 36-8 overall, 23-3 in conference play, and will finish the regular season with a road doubleheader against Itawamba on Tuesday, May 2. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Indians is scheduled for 1 p.m., in Fulton.
