Lady Wolves Earn Come From Behind Win Against Cobras

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Co-Lin Softball team continued their play in the NJCAA Division II World Series with a game against fourth-seeded and No. 4 Parkland on Wednesday, May 24. The Lady Wolves used a late offensive surge to earn a come-from-behind win against the Cobras, 4-2.

"What a game against a really good Parkland team," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "We did a great job of battling at the plate all day and Cara Biswell did a great job of keeping us in it in the circle."

The Lady Wolves got on the board first breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the first as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch she saw for a leadoff solo home run to make the score, 1-0. However, the Cobras scored one run in the bottom of the third and followed with one run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves then tied the game with one run in the fifth as Madison Moak reached on a leadoff bunt single while Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Zykeria Cole (Magee) then reached on a fielder's choice while Moak scored on the play tying the game at 2-2.

The Lady Wolves then took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Phillips then advanced to third on a double by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA) and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Josie Meggs regaining the lead for the Lady Wolves at 3-2. Kivett then scored as Moak reached on an error increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 4-2.

The Lady Wolves then allowed one runner via a walk in the sixth but took advantage of a base-running mistake by the Cobras on a two-out single to get the final out of the inning while in the seventh the Cobras got two runners on with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the game, sealing the win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled four hits as a team with Madison Moak, Maddie Weeks, Skyler Speights, and Faith Kivett had one hit each. Josie Meggs, Moak, Weeks, and Zykeria Cole had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 18-2 overall with the complete game win allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 45-9 overall and will move on in the winner's bracket of the tournament to face off against the top seed and No. 1 Murray State. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Aggies is set for 9 a.m., on Thursday, May 25.

"I'm just so proud of the effort we got from our team today and tomorrow is a big day against a good Murray State team," added Howard. "I am so excited to take this group to a national semifinal and I am doing what I can to savor every moment I can with such a special group of players."
