Lady Wolves Comeback Twice to Sweep Lady Bobcats

ELLISVILLE – The Co-Lin Softball team hit the road for the first time in conference play for a Top 10 matchup facing off against No. 6 Jones on Tuesday, March 19. The Lady Wolves erased two multi-run deficits in the top of the seventh in both games en route to a sweep of the Lady Bobcats taking game one, 7-6, and game two, 13-11.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got on the board first with three runs in the top of the first as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) making the score, 1-0

Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) then drew a walk while Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) then stepped up and crushed a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run increasing Lady Wolves lead to 3-0.

The Lady Wolves then got six combined baserunners from the second through fifth innings but could not push anymore runs across while the Lady Bobcats tied the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and then took the lead with their second three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth making the score, 6-3.

The Lady Wolves then scored four runs in the top of the seventh as Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) hit a one-out single to get the offense going while Kat Case (Monticello) was then brought in as a pinch runner. Taylor Efferson (Holden) and took one swing of the bat on the first pitch and smashed a two-run home run to cut the deficit down to 6-5. Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) was then brought as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-out single extending the inning. Moak then stepped up and crushed the first pitch of her at-bat for a two-out, go-ahead, two-run home run to give the Lady Wolves the lead, 7-6.

The Lady Bobcats got a single in the bottom of the seventh after back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning while a third strikeout ended the game securing the 7-6 win for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team with Madison Moak leading the way going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Kinley Ainsworth had two hits with Leia Phillips, Zykeria Cole, Taylor Efferson, and Laney Waguespack had one hit each. Moak, Phillips, and Efferson had two RBIs each while Kynlee Madere had one RBI.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and picked up a no-decision while pitching 5.1 innings and allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits with one walk and three hits. Taylor Efferson picked up the win in relief and improved to 3-0 while pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves got on the board early in the second game of the day plating four runs in the top of the first as Madison Moak hit a leadoff single while Kynlee Madere followed by drawing a walk. After Moak advanced to third on a fly out, Leia Phillips hit an RBI bunt single while an error on the play advanced Phillips to second and allowed Madere to score giving the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Phillips then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch while Zykeria Cole (Magee) drew a walk. Cole advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI single by Taylor Efferson making the score, 4-0.

The Lady Bobcats matched the Lady Wolves with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Lady Bobcats then scored four runs in the third and two in the fourth while holding the Lady Wolves to three combined baserunners from the second through fourth innings to take a 10-4 lead.

However, the Lady Wolves comeback attempt started with three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Richardson drew a leadoff walk, Phillips then singled, and Efferson drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. After Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) was brought in as a pinch runner for Eferson, Richardson scored on sacrifice fly by Kinley Ainsworth while a two-RBI single by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) scored Phillips and Fimiano cutting the deficit down to 10-7. The Lady Bobcats then added one run in the bottom of the sixth after holding the Lady Wolves off the board in the top half to increase their lead to 11-7.

Then the Lady Wolves exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh as Efferson drew a one-out walk while Ainsworth then singled. Maddie Bruner (Brandon) was then brought in as a pinch runner for Efferson and then scored on an RBI single by Warren making the score, 11-8. After Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) was brought in as a pinch hitter, Ainsworth scored on a wild pitch. Banes then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Later in the inning, Madere reached on an error while Warren scored on the play to cut the lead down to 11-10. Richardson was then walked to load the bases with two outs for the Lady Wolves. Phillips then delivered a bases clearing double scoring Banes, Madere, and Richardson to give the Lady Wolves a 13-11 lead.

The Lady Bobcats were then retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the second comeback and sweep for the Lady Wolves earning their second straight sweep of a Top-10 opponent.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a with Emeri Warren going a perfect 3-for-3 while Leia Phillips also had three hits during the game with Madison Moak and Kinley Ainsworth adding two hits each while Taylor Efferson had one hit. Phillips led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Warren had three with Efferson and Ainsworth adding one each.

Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 0.1 innings and allowing four runs, all unearned, on two hits. Taylor Efferson pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts while Laney Waguespack pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits. Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) picked up her first collegiate win in relief improving to 1-0 on the season. Rouse pitched a career-high four innings allowing one unearned run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 17-2 overall, 6-0 in conference play, and will return to action hosting John Melvin University on Thursday, March 21. First pitch between the Millers and the Lady Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
