Lady Wolves Sweep John Melvin

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action hosting John Melvin University on Thursday, March 21. The Lady Wolves used a dominant show of force en route to sweeping the Millers, 8-0 and 14-2, in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) took one swing of the bat and crushed a 1-1 pitch for a leadoff solo home run.

Later in the inning, Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) drew a walk, Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) singled, and Zykeria Cole (Magee) reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Richardson and Phillips then scored on a two-RBI double by Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) while Cole scored on an RBI groundout by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) making the score, 4-0.

The Lady Wolves added one run in the third as Phillips and Cole hit back-to-back singles to start the inning while Phillips then later scored in the inning on a two-out, RBI double by Warren increasing the lead to 5-0. The Lady Wolves added another solo run in the fourth as Maddie Bruner (Brandon) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA), and then scored on an RBI single by Richardson giving the Lady Wolves a 6-0 lead.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the fifth as Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) took one swing of the bat and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff solo home run. Later in the inning, Warren hit a one-out single, but was then forced out as Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) reached on a fielder's choice. Banes then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Bruner to end the game and give the Lady Wolves an 8-0 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Abby Grace Richardson, Leia Phillips, and Emeri Warren had two hits apiece while Madison Moak, Zykeria Cole, Sarah Grace Smith, Taylor Efferson, and Maddie Bruner had one hit each. Efferson and Warren led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Moak, Richardson, Smith, and Bruner had one RBI each.

Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start and improved to 5-0 on the season while pitching three innings and allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves used a big first inning in the second game to take an early lead as they plated eight runs. Madison Moak led off the inning being hit-by-pitch, Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) then reached safely on a fielder's choice while Abby Grace Richardson then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Moak then scored as Leia Phillips was hit-by-pitch while Zykeria Cole then hit a two-RBI double scoring Hughey and Richardson giving the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead. Emeri Warren then hit an RBI single scoring Phillips while Cole then scored on an error as Warren stole second and advanced to third on the play. Warren then scored on an RBI single by Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) increasing the lead to 6-0. Maddie Bruner then singled while Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) walked to load the bases with no outs. Waguespack then scored on an RBI single by Moak while Bruner later scored on a fielder's choice by Richardson giving the Lady Wolves an 8-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then added two runs in each inning from the second through the fourth as Warren hit a leadoff double and then Waguespack drew a walk in the second inning. Later in the inning, Warren scored on an RBI groundout by Goodson while Waguespack then scored as Avery Williams (Olive Branch) reached on an error making the score, 10-0.

In the third inning, Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ainsworth then scored on an RBI single by Cole while Warren then followed with a third-straight single. After Cole stole third, she then scored as Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) reached base on an error to give the Lady Wolves a 12-0 lead.

The fourth inning was started with three straight singles by Avery Williams, Emily Richarde, and Sarah Grace Smith to load the bases. Williams then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ainsworth while Richarde scored on an RBI single by Keegan McCorkle making the score, 14-0.

The Millers scored two runs in the fifth but a flyout ended the inning to secure the 14-2 victory and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 13 hits as a team with Emeri Warren leading the way going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with Zyekria Cole adding two hits while Madison Moak, Avery Williams, Emily Richarde, Sarah Grace Smith, Kinley Ainsworth, Keegan McCorkle, Laney Waguespack, and Maddie Bruner had one hit each. Cole led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Moak, Richardson, Ainsworth, McCorkle, Warren, Waguespack, Leia Phillips, Emma Kate Fimiano, and Bailee Goodson had one RBI each.

Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) got the start and improved to 2-0 on the season with the win allowing three hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Emma Kate Fimiano pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and three strikeouts while Laney Waguespack pitched one inning of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits with two walks.

Co-Lin is now 18-2 and returns to conference play on the road against No. 14 Northeast Mississippi on Saturday, March 23. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Tigers is set for 2 p.m., at The Plex on the campus of Northeast Mississippi in Booneville.
