Lady Wolves Earn Fourth Straight Sweep Over Nationally Ranked Opponent

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves resumed MACCC play with their fourth straight doubleheader against a nationally ranked opponent while hosting East Central on Wednesday, March 27. The No. 2 Lady Wolves swept the No. 9 Lady Warriors taking game one, 8-2, and game two, 6-5.

 GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves wasted no time scoring in game one as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first with Madison Moak (Brookhaven) and Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) drawing back-to-back walks to start the inning. Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) was then intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs for the Lady Wolves.

Moak then scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) hit a two-out RBI single scoring Phillips while Richardson later scored on a wild pitch increasing the lead to 3-0.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead in the bottom of the second as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff double and later stole home increasing the lead to 4-0. The Lady Wolves added another solo run in the bottom of the third as Richardson hit a leadoff double and then scored on a second-straight double by Efferson making the score, 5-0.

The Lady Warriors then struck for two runs in the top of the fifth, while taking advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves, making the score, 5-2. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) was brought in for a pinch-hit appearance and drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started. After Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) re-entered the game, Moak drew a second straight walk to put two runners on with no outs. After a strikeout put the first out on the board, Richardson stepped up and crushed a three-run home run over the centerfield fence increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 8-2.

The Lady Warriors then took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a double to start the top of the seventh to put two runners on with no outs; however, the Lady Wolves then turned a double play and ended the game on a lineout to secure the 8-2 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as a team with AG Richardson collecting the only mutli-hit outing with two hits while Taylor Efferson, Zykeria Cole (Magee), Kinley Ainsworth, and Carson Hughey had one hit. Richardson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Efferson had two and Ainsworth added one RBI.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) pitched a complete game and improved to 8-2 with the win allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day was scoreless through the first inning and a half of play, but the Lady Wolves scored first with a solo run in the bottom of the second.

Carson Hughey got the offense going with a one-out single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bailee Goodson, and then scored on an RBI double by Madison Moak to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. The lead held for the Lady Wolves until the Lady Warriors hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

However, the Lady Wolves responded in a grand way with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Moak hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Leia Phillips then reached on a fielder's choice as Moak was out on the play while Abby Grace Richardson was intentionally walked to put two runners on with one out. Later in the inning, Kinley Ainsworth drew a walk to load the bases with two outs allowing Zykeria Cole to step up to the plate. Cole needed just two pitches to turn the game around in the Lady Wolves favor as she crushed an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left centerfield for a grand slam to give the Lady Wolves a 5-2 lead.

The Lady Warriors then tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth making the score, 5-5. However, the Lady Wolves scratched across a run in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead.

Once again, the Lady Wolves turned to their bench and brought in Sarah Grace Smith for a pinch-hit appearance, and she drew a walk with one out on the board to put the go-ahead run at first base. After Bailee Goodson re-entered the game, Moak reached on an error to put two runners on with one out. However, Moak was forced out on the next play as Phillips reached on a fielder's choice. After Richardson was intentionally walked for the second straight plate appearance, Taylor Efferson scored the go-ahead run on a walk as Goodson crossed the plate on the play to give the Lady Wolves a 6-5 lead.

The Lady Warriors were then retired in order in the sixth and the seventh innings as the game was punctuated by a game-ending strikeout to secure the game two win, 6-5, and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves had six hits in the game as Madison Moak, Zykeria Cole, and Carson Hughey had two hits each. Cole led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Moak and Taylor Efferson had one RBI each.

Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching four innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits with two walks, and six strikeouts. Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Cara Biswell picked up the win in relief and improved to 9-2 overall pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 22-2 overall, 9-0 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Mississippi Delta on Friday, March 29. First pitch between the Lady Trojans and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
