Lady Wolves Wrap Up Regular Season with Sweep

CLARKSDALE – The Co-Lin Softball team finished the 2024 regular season with a road doubleheader against Coahoma on Saturday, April 27. The Lady Wolves Swept the Lady Tigers taking game one, 15-1, and game two, 8-0.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves wasted no time taking an early lead against the Lady Tigers as they scored eight runs in the top of the first with Madison Moak (Brookhaven) led off the game with a triple. Moak then scored on an RBI single by Abby Grace Richardson giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. After Richardson stole second, Zykeria Cole (Magee) singled while Richardson took third on the play and Cole advanced to second.

Richardson then scored on an RBI groundout by Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) while Cole then scored on an RBI double by Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 3-0. Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) then singled to put two runners on with one out. After Warren stole second, Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) drew a walk to load the bases. Ainsworth and Warren then scored on a two-RBI single by Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) while Banes took third on the play and Hughey advanced to second. Later in the inning, Moak cleared the bases with a three-run inside-the-park home run making the score, 8-0.

The Lady Tigers cut into the Lady Wolves lead with one run in the bottom of the first making the score, 8-1. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the top of the second as Efferson reached on an error, Ainsworth was hit-by-pitch, and Warren drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Banes and Hughey drew back-to-back walks scoring Efferson and Ainsworth respectively and increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 10-1. Later in the inning, Warren scored on a wild pitch making the score, 11-1.

The Lady Wolves added a single run in the top of the third as Cole hit a leadoff double, advanced to third after a fly out, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Ainsworth increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 12-1. The Lady Wolves final three runs came in the fourth as Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) hit a leadoff single, Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) drew a walk, and Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) singled to load the bases with no outs.

Waguespack was then forced out as Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) reached on a fielder's choice. Madere and Goodson then scored on a two-RBI single by Cole making the score, 14-1. Later in the inning, Maddie Bruner (Brandon) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs while Avery Williams (Olive Branch) drew a second-straight walk scoring Smith and increasing the lead to 15-1.

The Lady Tigers were the retired in order in the bottom of the fourth and then got a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Wolves then got three straight outs including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and secure the 15-1 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled 13 hits during the game as Zykeria Cole led the way with three hits while Madison Moak, AG Richardson, and Emeri Warren added two hits apiece with Kynlee Madere, Kinley Ainsworth, Carson Hughey, and Laney Waguespack adding one hit each. Moak and Hughey led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three each, Cole and Ainsworth had two RBIs apiece while Richardson, Taylor Efferson, Avery Williams, and Olivia Banes had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 16-3 overall. Biswell allowed one earned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in two innings. Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched two innings of relief with three strikeouts while Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) pitched one inning of relief with one walk and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Once again, the Lady Wolves got on the board early in the game scoring three runs in the top of the first as Madison Moak led off the game being hit-by-pitch. After Moak stole second, AG Richardson drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. After the Lady Wolves pulled a double steal with Moak taking third and Richardson stealing second, Moak scored as Zykeria Cole which on a dropped third strike making the score, 1-0.

Once again, the Lady Wolves attempted a double steal, but Richardson was caught stealing while Cole stole second on the play. Cole then scored on an RBI single by Kinley Ainsworth who then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Emeri Warren making the score, 3-0.

The Lady Wolves then added three runs in the top of the second as Bailee Goodson and Moak hit back-to-back singles with one out to put two runners on. After a double steal by the Lady Wolves, Richardson crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a three-run home run to double the Lady Wolves score at 6-0. Two batters later, Taylor Efferson smashed the first pitch of her at-bat for a solo home run over the left field fence increasing the score to 7-0.

The Lady Wolves added their final run of the game in the top of the fifth as Efferson reached on an error and then was replaced by Kat Case (Monticello) as a pinch runner. Later in the inning, Case stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Warren making the score, 8-0.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Lady Tigers in order in the bottom of fifth to secure the 8-0 game two victory and sweep.

The Lady Wolves totaled eight hits as Emeri Warren had the only multi-hit game with two hits while Madison Moak, AG Richardson, Taylor Efferson, Kinley Ainsworth, Olivia Banes, and Bailee Goodson had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Warren had two RBIs with Efferson and Ainsworth adding one RBI each.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 9-0 overall allowing one hit and one strikeout. Taylor Efferson, Karley Rouse (D'Iberville), and Laney Waguespack all pitched in relief in the combined shutout as all three pitched hitless and scoreless innings. Efferson had one walk and two strikeouts while Rouse and Waguespack faced just three batters each in their appearances with Rouse striking out two of three, she faced.

Co-Lin improves to 39-3 overall, 26-1 in conference play, and will now turn their attention to the Region 23 Tournament where they will be the No. 1 overall seed and host one of two pod play sites. The opponents and times for those games are still to be determined, but play will start on Friday, May 3 at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
