Lady Wolves Sweep Ranked Matchup with Wildcats

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed MACCC play by hosting Pearl River on Tuesday, April 8 in a Top 15 matchup. The No. 4 Lady Wolves swept the No. 14 Wildcats taking game one, 10-2, and game two, 9-2.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader saw the Wildcats jump ahead early as they scored a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Lady Wolves cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the second as Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) drew a walk, Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) singled, while Morgan Chisolm (Madison) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) then reached on a fielder's choice as Madere was out at home on the play. Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) then hit an RBI-single scoring Warren, and the Lady Wolves looked to tie the game, but Chisolm was thrown out at home to end the inning with the score sitting at 2-1.

The Lady Wolves then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) drew a leadoff walk while Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) reached on an error to put two runners on with no outs. Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) then hit a two-RBI single scoring Phillips and Banes to give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.

That score held until the Lady Wolves exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth as Avery Williams (Olive Branch) hit a single while Madere hit a double to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Warren then hit an RBI single scoring Avery Williams while an error on the play allowed Madere to score and push the lead to 5-2. Warren then scored on an RBI-triple by Chisolm making the score, 6-2. Burnette and Hughey then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Chisolm then scored on a sacrifice fly by Phillips while Burnette scored on an error on the play making the score, 8-2.

The Lady Wolves then ended the game with a pair of runs as Avery Williams hit a one-out double to get the offense started while Madere followed by drawing a walk. Warren then stepped up and hit a two-RBI double scoring Williams and Madere to end the game with a 10-2 final score.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Emeri Warren led the way with a perfect 4-for-4 outing while Avery Williams and Kynlee Madere had two hits each (Madere also drew two walks to reach base in all four plate appearances) with Taylor Efferson, Morgan Chisolm, and Carson Hughey had one hit apiece. Warren led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Efferson had two with Phillips, Chisolm, and Hughey had one RBI each.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) got the start and improved to 13-0 with the complete game win allowing two earned runs on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Lady Wolves take an early lead as they scored one run in the bottom of the first. After Brelie Phillips hit a leadoff double, Olivia Banes and Taylor Efferson drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Later in the inning, Kynlee Madere then reached on a fielder's choice allowing Phillips to score while Efferson was forced out on the play to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats then scored one run in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The Wildcats then took the lead with a single run in the top of the third making the score, 2-1. That lead held for the Wildcats until the Lady Wolves exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth as Avery Williams drew a leadoff walk while Madere reached base on an error to put runners on the corners with no outs.

Emeri Warren then tied the game with an RBI-single scoring Avery Williams making the score, 2-2. Later in the inning, Stella Roberts (Raymond) stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch she saw for a three-run home run that was caught at the fence by the Wildcats left fielder and then popped out of her glove and went over to give the Lady Wolves a 5-2 lead. Later in the inning, Phillips hit a two-out triple to extend the inning while Banes then hit an RBI-single scoring Phillips and extending the lead to 6-2. After Banes stole second and took third on an error, Efferson hit an RBI-single scoring Banes and increasing the lead to 7-2.

The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the sixth as Roberts hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carson Hughey. Phillips then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and clobbered a 2-1 pitch over the fence in center field for a two-run home run to push the lead to 9-2.

The Wildcats then got two runners on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game and secured the sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled eight hits in the game as Brelie Phillips had three hits and came up a single short of hitting for the cycle while Stella Roberts had two hits with Olivia Banes, Taylor Efferson, and Emeri Warren adding one hit each. Roberts led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Phillips had two with Banes, Efferson, Madere, and Warren adding one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 12-2 with the complete game win while allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 32-4 overall, 19-1 in MACCC play, and will hit the road for their second ranked doubleheader of the week facing off against Northeast on Saturday, April 12. First pitch between the No. 4 Lady Wolves and No. 11 Tigers is set for 1 p.m., at The Plex in Booneville.
