Lady Wolves Finish Historic Regular Season with Sweep of Lady Trojans

MOORHEAD – The Co-Lin Softball team wrapped up the regular season with a road doubleheader against Mississippi Delta on Sunday, April 27. The No. 3 Lady Wolves swept the Lady Trojans taking game one, 2-0, and game two, 8-0.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel as the starters for both teams allowed limited baserunners and scoring opportunities for the opposition. After the Lady Wolves got a runner to third in the fourth and fifth innings and failed to score, they broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs to take the lead.

Avery Williams (Olive Branch) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going and then later in the inning Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) was brought in as a pinch runner. Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) was then hit-by-pitch while Stella Roberts (Raymond) reached on a fielder's choice while Laiche was forced out on the play. Emilie Williams (Summit) then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) then drew a walk scoring Warren while Roberts then scored on a passed ball to make the lead 2-0.

The Lady Trojans then hit a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but the inning came to an end after a double play by the Lady Wolves. Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) then hit a leadoff single to start the top of the seventh, but was left stranded after three straight outs. The Lady Trojans then went strikeout, groundout, strikeout to secure the game one victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled seven hits as Olivia Banes and Avery Williams led the way with two hits apiece while Brelie Phillips (Conehatta), Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA), and Emeri Warren had one hit each. Carson Hughey had one RBI for the Lady Wolves.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) got the start and finished the regular season a perfect 18-0 (13 wins in MACCC play) with the complete game shutout win allowing four hits with three walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts, which is also her single game career-high at Co-Lin.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Wolves jump ahead early as they scored one run in the top of the first. Brelie Phillips drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started. After Phillips stole second, Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) hit a one-out, RBI-single scoring Phillips and giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with a solo run in the top of the second as Emilie Williams hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on an error, and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Stella Roberts making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves then added three more runs in the top of the third as Avery Williams hit a two-out single to get the offense started. Kynlee Madere then followed with a single to put two runners on with two outs while Emeri Warren then hit an RBI-single scoring Avery Williams making the score, 3-0. Emilie Williams then hit a two-RBI double scoring Madere and Warren and extending the lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves added the final three runs in the top of the fifth as Avery Williams hit a leadoff double and then advanced to third on a single by Madere. Later in the inning, Roberts hit a two-out, two-RBI single scoring Avery Williams and Madere while Carson Hughey hit an RBI-single scoring Roberts and increasing the lead to 8-0.

The Lady Trojans then hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Wolves then retired the next three batters to secure the game two victory and sweep.

The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits as Avery Williams, Kynlee Madere, and Emilie Williams had two hits apiece with Taylor Efferson, Emeri Warren, Stella Roberts, and Carson Hughey adding one hit each. Roberts led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three, while Warren had two with Efferson and Hughey adding one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 15-2 with the complete game shutout win allowing just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.

Co-Lin finishes the regular season 40-4 overall and set a MACCC record for the best finish ever at 27-1. The Lady Wolves have earned the No. 1 seed and will host one of two pods in the NJCAA Region 23 Softball Tournament. The Lady Wolves will face off against the winner of the No.8 seed Itawamba and No. 9 seed East Central on Friday, May 2 at 3 p.m.
