Lady Wolves rally late and defeat Southwest

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves grabbed a thrilling 55-53 come-from-behind win against Southwest Thursday night in front a big crowd in Mullen Gymnasium. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 18-3 on the season and to second place in the south division with a 9-3 record. The win was a nice bounce back as the Lady Bears defeated Co-Lin 64-62 in overtime on January 22. The Lady Wolves are on the road Monday, February 19 as Co-Lin travels to Meridian to take on the Lady Eagles. "I told we needed to stop letting them get second chances and to run our offense more effectively…and I think we did that in the fourth quarter," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "We executed much better late in the game, and if we want to win games like this that's what you have to do. We just need to take things one game at a time for the rest of the season."

Both the Lady Wolves and Lady Bears struggled on the offensive end of floor early in Thursday's contest as Co-Lin led 12-10 after one quarter of play.

A 6-0 Southwest run in the second quarter gave the Lady Bears a two-point, 16-14, lead with 6:28 until the half. Action was back-and-forth for the remainder of the second quarter as the lead changed four more times before the buzzer. Midway through the game the Lady Bears led Co-Lin 23-21.

The third quarter was much of the same for Co-Lin as the Lady Wolves only scored 11 points. The Lady Bears pulled away to a 10-point, 42-32, lead going into the final quarter of play.

The Lady Bears stretched their lead to 13, 47-34, early in the quarter, but Co-Lin refused to quit. A 9-2 Co-Lin run led by Alexus Holt and Karry Callahan cut into Southwest's lead. The Lady Wolves followed that with another offensive explosion led by Kyeonia Harris. The 12-2 run over the final five minutes of play was the result of solid free throw shooting, and several defensive stops. The impressive push gave the Lady Wolves a four-point, 55-51 lead with just four seconds left on the clock, and sealed the win for Co-Lin.

Holt led the Lady Wolves with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Harris, Callahan, and Alexandria Patton all scored nine for the Lady Wolves. Callahan led Co-Lin with three blocks while Diamond Smith posted two. Holt and Callahan also led the team with two steals each.

Keturah Bingham and Rachel Thompson led Southwest with 13 points each. Thompson posted a double-double after leading the Lady Bears with 12 rebounds. Kacie Fountain led Southwest with six assists.

Co-Lin shot 35 percent (19-for-54) from the field, 25 percent (4-for-16) from the three-point line, and 65 percent (13-for-20) from the foul stripe. The Lady Bears finished the night shooting 35 percent (19-for-54) from the field, 0 percent (0-for-6) from beyond the arc, and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the free throw line.
