Lady Wolves defeat PRCC in low scoring contest

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves took the lead in the third quarter and never looked back as the Lady Wolves defeated Pearl River Community College 53-46 in a defensive battle. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 20-3 on the year and 11-3 in the MACJC South Division, which secures second place. Co-Lin travels to Senatobia next Tuesday to play in the MACJC State Tournament hosted by Northwest Community College. "I thought first had some spurts of good offense, but they were getting so many second chances with offensive rebounds," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "In the second half our defense was much better. We were more disciplined and were able to find the basket in put ourselves in a position to win."

PRCC controlled the game early as the Lady Wildcats pulled out to a seven point, 15-8 lead late in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves struggled making shots early on, but rallied in the final minutes of the first scoring seven in the final minutes, including a T'Kyra Hicks three pointer at the buzzer. The late rally cut into PRCC's lead and the Lady Wildcats took a 15-13 advantage into the second quarter.

The teams traded baskets for most of the third quarter until Nakeisha Holcomb drove to the rim with 2:14 remaining. The layup gave Co-Lin a one point 25-24 lead, their first since early in the first quarter. The lead was short lived as the Lady Wildcats responded on the next possession, giving PRCC a one point, 26-25 lead going into the half.

A Kyeonia Harris layup followed by another three from Hicks put the Lady Wolves up by three in the opening minutes of the second half. The Lady Wolves never waivered with their third lead of the contest. Back-to-back jumpers from Holcomb and Harris stretched the lead to six, 34-28, midway through the third.

The Wildcats made a late push midway through the fourth and went on a 7-2 run led by Charisma Walker to tie the game 44-44, the fourth tied of the game. Alexus Holt took over on the next two Co-Lin possessions and made a layup and kocked down two free throws to stretch Co-Lin's lead back to four, 48-44, with 3:03 remaining.

Holt proved solid at the free throw line late in the contest as she held the Wildcats back in the final minutes as the Lady Wolves' lead grew to seven, 53-46.

Holt led the Lady Wolves with 18 points on the night and the sophomore hauled in four rebounds. Hicks and Holcomb both scored 10 on the night while Harris poured in nine. Karry Callahan led the Lady Wolves on the glass with six rebounds and led the team with six assists. Both Holt and Harris had three steals in the contest.

Tariah Mouton led PRCC with 12 points, while Walker added 11 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double.

Co-Lin shot 44 percent (20-for-45) from the field, 22 percent (2-for-9) from the three-point line, and 48 percent (11-for-23) from the foul stripe. The Lady Wildcats finished the night shooting 30 percent (17-for-56) from the field, 15 percent (4-for-26) from beyond the arc, and 53 percent (8-for-15) from the free throw line.
