Co-Lin rolls by East Central, 70-60

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves moved to 15-4, 6-4 on Thursday night with a 70-60 win over the East Central Community College Lady Warriors. The teams entered the contest with even records so ECCC dropped to 14-5, 5-5. The win puts Co-Lin a jam with Gulf Coast and Pearl River all tied for the MACJC South Division second place spot with 6-4 records. The Lady Wolves are on the road Monday, February 11 as the team travels to Summit to face the Southwest Lady Bears at 5:30. Co-Lin skirted by the Lady Bears earlier in the year in Wesson, 56-51. Fans can keep up with action live on Monday on WMJU 104.3 FM or at colinathletics.com.

"You need to win home games, and grab wins on the road when you can," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "I liked some of the things we did tonight, we rebounded a lot better, and that was the difference for us…we also shot free throw well. We just have to try to get better every game, Monday is one of those rival games that we have to be ready for."

The Lady Wolves trailed early as East Central fired off a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead, their largest of the contest. Co-Lin quickly recovered after Camryn Davis hit a pair of free throws followed by a layup. The Lady Wolves grew that lead to seven late in the first, before pushing into double-digits in the second quarter. In the final minutes of the second quarter, Co-Lin netted eight straight, led by TaMara Riley. The offensive burst put Co-Lin on top by 14, 39-25, the largest lead of the night. The Lady Warriors hit a late three-pointer, which gave the Lady Wolves an 11-point advantage at the half.

The third and fourth quarters were back and forth action as the teams traded baskets preventing Co-Lin from taking a commanding lead. The Lady Warriors went on a 5-0 run midway through the fourth to cut the lead down to six, 61-55, but Co-Lin's T'Kyra Hicks cut the run short with a jumper. Co-Lin followed with stellar free throw shooting down the stretch to hang on to the lead.

Riley led the Lady Wolves with 20 points after shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-2 from three-point range. Davis added 14 while shooting 100 percent, 6-of-6, from the stripe, and Sha'Quandra Carter rounded out the top scorers with 11. Carter and Alexandria Patton, who came off the bench, led the way on the glass with eight rebounds each.

Jariyah Covington led East Central with 20 points, while Damond Wraggs scored 12. Wraggs and Sharan Turner both posted six rebounds to lead the Lady Warriors.

Co-Lin shot 37 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, 23 percent (3-of-13) from three-point range, and 79 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line. The Lady Warriors shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor, 28 percent (5-of-18) from downtown, and 45 percent (9-of-20) from the stripe. Co-Lin crashed the boards as they outrebounded the Lady Warriors 50 to 33.
