Lady Wolves hand Gulf Coast first loss of the year

PERKINSTON, Miss. - The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College improved to 8-3, 2-0 on Thursday with a 49-42 defensive win over Mississippi Gulf Coast on the road. The game was the first loss for the Lady Bulldogs who fall to 9-1, 1-1. The Lady Wolves continue their stretch of MACJC South Division matchups with East Central on Monday, January 13 in Mullen Gymnasium on Co-Lin's Wesson campus at 5:30 p.m. Fans that can not attend can watch the action live at colinathletics.com/watch or listen live at WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven. 

Offensive action was slim throughout the game as both teams played physical, defensive basketball. Gulf Coast led 13-10 after an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter with momentum. The Lady Bulldogs built on that lead early in the second to 22-14, but a three-pointer from Sha'Quandra Carter kept the lead manageable and sparked a Co-Lin offensive push. The Lady Wolves scored seven straight to trail by just one, 22-21, at the half. 

Co-Lin kept that scoring up in the third quarter as the Lady Wolves regained the lead, 23-22, in the opening minutes. The Lady Wolves outpaced the Lady Bulldogs 19-11 in the third to take a seven-point, 40-33, advantage into the fourth quarter. The final ten minutes were back-and-forth as strong defensive play limited offensive opportunities, but Co-Lin was able to maintain the lead and solidify the win impressive play from Camryn Davis, Darien Tubby, Dashell Davis, Orieon James, and Carter. 

Camryn Davis played very well for Co-Lin and led the team in scoring with 12 points and an impressive five steals in the contest, while Dashell Davis hustled under the basket to haul in a team-best 12 rebounds and four blocks. James came off the bench and added 10 points as she went 5-for-6 from the floor, while TaMara Riley added eight. 

Kayla Simmons led Gulf Coast with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Kelsi Jackson added another 12 points.

The Lady Wolves shot 29 percent (18-of-62) from the floor, 19 percent (4-of-21) from three-point range, and 47 percent (9-of-19) from the free-throw line. The Lady Bulldogs shot 25 percent (13-of-52) from the floor, seven percent (1-of-13) from downtown, and 56 percent (15-of-27) from the stripe. Gulf Coast outrebounded Co-Lin 50 to 45, but the Lady Wolves limited turnovers with 10 to the Lady Bulldog's 20.
