Southwest defeats Lady Wolves in Summit

SUMMIT, Miss. - The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College had shooting woes throughout the night as the Lady Bears defeated Co-Lin 60-46. The loss drops Co-Lin to 8-5, 2-2 on the year and moves Southwest to 10-3, 3-1. The Lady Wolves continue MACJC South Division play on Tuesday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m. as the team plays host to Hinds Community College. The game will also serve as the 30-year reunion for Gwyn Young's 1989-2020 team. Fans can watch the game live at www.colinathletics.com/watch

"The first half really hurt us shooting just 15 percent," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "We had some chances in the second half but were 4-for-25 from the three-point range really killed us. Part of it is not having everyone playing like TaMara Riley and Darrien Tubby, but during the season anybody can be hurt so we need players to step up. We did pretty good on defense, but we need to step up and rebound the ball. Overall we played hard, but we have to get smarter and start shooting the ball better."

The Lady Wolves struggled to find a rhythm in the quarter as Lady Bears outscored Co-Lin 15-5 in the first 10 minutes of play. Those shooting problems continued to plague the team in the second quarter as Southwest took a 28-13 lead into the locker room at the half.

The opening minutes of the third quarter was all Co-Lin as the team exited the locker room on fire with an 8-2 run with big baskets from Camryn Davis, Sha'Quandra Carter, and Dashell Davis. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears' lead was too much to overcome down the stretch. Co-Lin outpaced Southwest 20-19 in the third quarter, and both squads poured in 13 points in the fourth.

Carter led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 14 points, while Dashell Davis and Camryn Davis led the team in rebounds with 12 and 11, respectively. Jolie Williams led Southwest with 12 points, while four other Lady Bears scored in double digits.

The Lady Wolves shot 27 percent (18-of-66) from the floor, 16 percent (4-of-25) from three-point range, and 33 percent (6-of-18) from the free-throw line. The Lady Bears shot 33 percent (19-of-58) from the floor, 25 percent (6-of-24) from downtown, and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the stripe. The Lady Wolves outrebounded the Lady Bears 54 to 46, but lost the turnover battle 19 to 15.
