Lady Wolves make strong showing at Nationals

TYLER, Texas – Coming fresh off winning their State Championship, the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves tennis continued their hot streak making a strong showing at the National Junior College Athletic Association's National Women's Tennis in Tyler, Texas. The Lady Wolves finished 14th out of 31 teams and were the top Mississippi team in the tournament. Co-Lin scored 15.5 points followed by 15th place Meridian with 14 points, Jones College in 21st place with 7.5 points, and Mississippi Gulf Coast with 1 point in 29th place.

"All the girls played well," said Lady Wolves Head Coach Dr. Rob Channell. "I'm very proud of our team. We had a couple of really tough draws. It was a great experience for them and they represented Co-Lin with class. This amazing group of young women will be successful wherever they go after Co-Lin."

In the team competition, ASA Miami finished in first place with 47 points followed by Hillsborough and Tyler with 42 points, Broward at 27.5, Cowley and State College of Florida at 26.

The first day of competition saw the Lady Wolves win three out of six singles matches and all three doubles matches. Co-Lin's Paula Coronado fell to the #1 seed Maria Genovese of Tyler JC in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 in her first match. Coronado bounced back making it to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

Defending state champion Ashlyn Locke defeated Monica Almazan of Central Alabama 6-1, 6-0 in her opening round match at No. 5 singles. Locke would advance to the winner's bracket quarterfinals after beating Jazmin Nunez of Pima in a hard-fought

three set match 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Renata Gonzalez-Leon of Hillsborough (FL) would blank Locke in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0.

After dropping her first-round match 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Kori Obert of Lewis & Clark, Co-Lin's Madison Shows would make a run in the consolation bracket. She would defeat Kailee Upchurch 6-2 and Judith Mills of Jones 6-4 to reach the consolation finals. In her third match of the day, Shows fell to Jaja Rulj 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Carmen Manicea defeated Ashlynn Miller of Jacksonville 6-1, 6-2, but fell to #1 seed Tatiana Simova of ASA Miami in the second round 6-0 6-2.

Co-Lin's Katy Clark defeated Venus Ubiebe of NNMI 6-0, 6-2 in her opening match at No. 3 singles. She fell to the #4 seed Sara Ramirez-Goncalves of State College of Florida 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 4 singles, Sarah Rushing of Central Alabama defeated Kara Clark 6-1, 6-4. Clark would bounce back to defeat Stephanie Bencomo of Eastern Arizona 8-1 to move into the quarterfinals of the consolation round where she lost to Kaitlyn Craig 6-3.

In doubles action, all three teams would win their first-round matches. In the second round, #5 seed Maria Aviega/Patricia Panta (Seward County) defeated Manicea/Coronado (CL) 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, #7 seed Gwendolen Sior/Claudia Sumaia (Barton) defeated Clark/Clark (CL) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 and # 5 seed Anastasiya Salenko/Abigail Turnquest (St. Petersburg) took care of Shows/Shows (CL) 6-1, 6-1.
