Slagle and Day lead Wolves in win over Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves took on the Belhaven Blazers JV team yesterday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. Thomas Slagle and Joshua Day combined for six hits and eight RBIs in the 12-3 Co-Lin victory. The win does not affect MACJC standings but moves Co-Lin to 15-11 overall on the year. The Wolves take on the Baton Rouge Community College Bears tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. in a single nine-inning contest in Baton Rouge, La.

Belhaven was first on the board in the contest with an RBI double in the bottom of the first to capitalize on the leadoff runner reaching on an error.

The Wolves quickly erased that one-run deficit in the top of the second with an RBI triple from Austin Tidwell. Tidwell's shot to center field plated Slagle and Mark Hubbard who reached base on back-to-back base hits earlier in the frame.

In the third, Co-Lin poured it on the Blazers as Day ripped a double to score Ryan Zimmerman. Kylar Fielder followed with an RBI single before Slagle broke the game open with a three-run bomb to left field. The explosive stretch of hitting put Co-Lin on top 7-1 going into the bottom of the third.

Slagle kept the bat going in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to grow the lead to 8-1.

The Blazers got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh on two RBI groundouts to cut the lead to 8-3, but Co-Lin added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Zimmerman roped a line drive to right field to score Madison Smith, followed by a base-clearing double from Day that plated Landry McQueen, Zimmerman, and Trey Frierson.

Bryce Henry came to the mound in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 12-3 victory.

Zimmerman joined Day and Slagle as the only Wolves with multiple hits, while Tidwell joined the pair with multiple RBIs with two.

Five Wolves saw time on the mound with Lane Hanna getting the start and the win. He lasted three innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out three and walking one.  Tucker Jones, Clint Emmons, Jay Smith, and Henry all entered the game as relief and recorded outs in the game.
