Wolves fall to Pearl River 40-21 in homecoming matchup

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves (4-5, 2-4) were unable to secure a homecoming victory Saturday as the Wildcats of Pearl River Community College (5-4, 3-3) defeated Co-Lin 40-21. The Wildcats outgained the Wolves 402 yards to 285 yards. The South Division matchup was the season finale for both programs.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Wolves finally found the end zone early in the second. Co-Lin went on a quick four-play, 36-yard drive that was set up with a DeMatre Collins punt return. Woody Barrett capped off the drive with a seven-yard strike to Jalen Browder. Sublett tacked on the extra point and gave Co-Lin a 7-0 lead early in the second.

The Wildcats answered later in the second with a pick-six. J'Quille Washington grabbed Barrett's pass and took it 31-yards to the end zone, however, the ensuing point after attempt was no good. The Wolves led 7-6 with 10:54 remaining in the half.

The Wolves stretched that lead to 14-6 after Carlos Ransburgh punched in another score from one-yard out with 8:45 remaining. The Wildcats responded quickly yet again as Jesse Pernell broke free for a 42-yard touchdown rush to cut Co-Lin's lead to 14-13.

PRCC closed out the half with a 4 minute 37 second, ten-play drive. Markevion Quinn finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown rush with just five seconds remaining. The score gave the Wildcats a 20-14 lead at the half.

Pearl River fumbled the kickoff to start the second half, and the Wolves capitalized on the opportunity. Barrett found Nero Nelson from 23-yards out to give Co-Lin its second lead of the game, 21-20.

Once again the Wildcats countered. Quinn ripped a 49-yard touchdown rush to recapture the lead. Pearl River added two more scores later in the quarter to stretch the Wildcats lead to 40-21.

Barrett led the Wolves' passing game with 200 yards on 12 completions. The freshman threw two touchdowns and had two interceptions.

Ransburgh led Co-Lin's rushing attack with 58 yards on six carries and a score. Deion Dampier added another 26 yards on nine touches.

Nero Nelson led the Wolves' receivers with 65 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Drew had 57 yards. Rico Owens also posted 27 yards on two receptions out of the backfield.

Defensively, Graham Eklund led the Wolves with eight tackles and two sacks. Lomoni Jones, Charles Cameron, and Jakaiszer Glass posted seven tackles each.
